Yes, we use gcc 4.1.1 and it shouldn't be too hard at all to upgrade, you can even use the dvd for that if you want to go experimentally. We have an overlay, but mainly rely on the main portage, we're just preconfiguring things

what does the sabayon overlay actually contain and where is it's portage tree on the filesystem?

So I can just install it and just use emerge and things should just work like it was in Gentoo?

in a sense, it is still in gentoo imho.....i mean, we use the same tools, same directory structure...same repositories for the most part..........but our instalation method will rock your face off Gentoo's installation on the other hand, may lead to mental anguish or personal injury due to lack of nurishment / sleep yay for sabayon.

SL is pure gentoo...all we did was preconfigure stuff

ok...does it just replace certain packages in the partage tree...? or does it have a tree of it's own?

all it is is just extra ebuilds that we add that are then emergable, such as if portage doesn't have an ebuild or is slow to update or something, that sort of thing

where is it's databese located on the file system? The reason i ask is i move the portage tree to a different location since it gets updated so often and i'd like to do the same with the sabayon overlay

layman takes care of it, so if you cat its make.conf you get this:
