Unreal Tournament 2004 Problems

Hi All,

I've been trying to get ut2004 working on Sabayon, but everytime I launch it, the splash screen loads then kicks me out. It always asks for my cdkey, but this can't be the case as I've entered it numerous times. The odd thing is that I can run it as root, and the game boots fine. When I launch it as my regular user, it keeps failing. I've even chmodded the main directory and added myself to the games group, but this is to no avail.

Any ideas?

You need to run a ut2004-config script to enter the cdkey, or you can enter your cdkey manually to this file

/opt/ut2004/System/CDkey

If the CDkey file don't exist, the just make it and enter your cdkey in format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

No, I've run that, and my cdkey is fine. It only runs as root, though...

The chmmod part is the right direction not sure how but likely the whole folder + subfolders + files has to be correct to work ??
Might have to check out a wiki for permissions and then edit the file on you SL install that is the directory for the permsissions to correct a mistake or something.

Maybe /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab should be edited as well ?? I think this is wher ethe problem is possibly not sure. 0 0 or 0 1 just enter the correct ones according to a guide / wiki .

Have you added you self to the group "games" ?

You say "the main directory", implying you only chmodded 1 directory. The game uses 2 directories, whichever you installed to (default /home/yourname/ut2004 i think) and another one for downloaded files and your ut2004/user ini's in /home/yourname/.ut2004 (notice the dot). chmod 777 both and see if that helps. Just the install directory won't do it. When you installed, i'm betting you did it as root/sudo, which isn't the way to go. sh ./linux-installer.sh or whatnot will work just fine. My guess is that it keeps asking for the cd key because the system isn't given permission to open the saved cd key file when run as your normal user.

Thanks, guys, but nothing seems to work. My cdkey is fine, I've added the user to the games group, and chmodded the folders/files in my home directory. Nice find, FrozenFox -- my permissions were messed up in the home directory. I didn't even think to check that.

I emerged everything from portage... could that be part of the problem?

Hmm, perhaps. I installed and run UT04 without using sudo / su root using the installer script located on the DVD (or cd depending on which you have). Note though that if you have the cd version, the "insert next cd" message can hide behind the installer window sometimes, so if it seems frozen, it's probably not. Just open up konsole, put in the installer disc, type sh and a space, and drag-n-drop the linux-install.sh or whatever file on the ut cd into konsole.. that's what I did kind of lazy, but it works fine for me.
