How do I get games like ut2k4 doom3 etc.. Do the ones they sell at wally world work in linux natively or do I have to buy a special linux version?

You just buy the game, have the cd/dvd, then emerge it from portage and ahve the cd/dvd in your reader and emerge will do the rest ;)

emerge quake4 or emerge ut2004 or emerge doom3

If your into Linux gaming I recommend Tremulous. It's a Quake3 Mod that I've had much fun with at my most recent little LAN party. It's also completely free (both ways) and you don't need to buy Quake 3 to play it.

You can compile those games from source, I think, so I don't see why not. To get tremulous it's emerge quake3-tremulous. You also might try Battle for Wesnoth (emerge wesnoth). It's not very graphics intense, but it's a fairly complex chess-like turn based strategy game. If you like flight-fighter sims, try GL-117 (emerge gl117). The same folks who made that game are also working on a submarine sim, and that looks pretty cool, although I haven't got my hands on it. It's called "Danger from The Deep." It's not available through portage, but you can download the source here.

Hey pxc, thanks for those tidbits :) I forgot about Battle for Wesnoth (emerge wesnoth) and I used to play it :P So I'll have to emerge it and try it again, it was pretty fun strategy wise. When I get back home, I'll def check that stuff out esp with the quake3 stuff....don't forget Cold War guys...we should all support people who develop games FOR linux :D

Yeah, I just finished emerging Tremulous a while ago, but I'm not sure how Portage handles it. If you go to tremulous.net, you can download a standalone installer, which does NOT install Quake 3, which may be a faster install. There's no tremulous binary in /usr/bin after I emerged it, which is how it usually goes, so I'll have to find out where the heck it put the thing/how to start it. (emerging slocate for just that)

Edit: The game doesn't launch because you must also emerge quake3-bin. However, the version in portage is not the latest, as Tremulous 1.1.0 has a standalone installer that you can download at tremulous.net in the files section. I think I'm gonna unmerge the quake3 stuff and then installer Tremulous manually.

Wesnoth's installed by default, no need to e-merge.
