Hi there, I spllit your topic as it had no relevance to bettering the howto/tutorial ;)

So what do you mean by genkernel is "locking up" your computer...did the mouse freeze? did you have keyboard but no mouse? or was the system just really, really slow? How old is your hardware? When you run that, you'll see a menu config that you can play with or leave the same, then you have to let it compile for some time (depending on your hardware). For me I can compile in under 30 minutes, not sure about yours. Please give more explaination in your future post so we can help diagnos faster to fix your problem quicker :D

Genkernel Problems.

here is part of my uname stats.
2.6.17-reiser4-r1-nosmp i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1800 AuthenticAMD

I bought my system back in 2001. It has 1gb DDR ram. and it should have plenty of memory and hard drive space. The system froze up meaning I couldnt move the mouse or anything. It sounded like it was doing something but nothing was moving, so I just rebooted. It shouldnt stop your mouse and keyboard from working right? It also wasn't responding to CTRL+ALT+DEL. Hope this helps, and I apologize for posting in the wrong forum.

np, just next time you do the genkernel, have a terminal open and type top in there before doing it, so we can see if its just genkernel eating up your processor, also, you can see if the keyboard is dead by typing Ctrl+Alt+F1 to drop into a console mode which will give you more ram to spare

also, if you do a "cat /var/logs/messages | grep kernel" does it print out anything?

Thats all i got, ill attempt to update again tonight so i can get the 2.6.17-r7 kernel from gentoo.

Okay, first of all, did you install using anaconda's lvm model? If you did, you need to add --lvm2 to your genkernel parameters.

Second of all, can you just go ahead and let it compile overnight to see if its just the processor being a bit on the lag side or something? Just exit the menuconfig when it comes up (or use --nomenuconfig) and start it compiling and we'll see. Let me know after an overnight testing please :)

No I didnt use anaconda i did the text installer via "console installer-text" rather than using the GUI because it kept locking up on me at 20% so I needed to do it via the console. Also now when I run the installer all it wants to do is error out on me all the time while running the bzImage.
