Keeping SL

Postby timboellis » Thu Oct 25, 2007 0:18

Well back on Windows just now, for 3 main reasons but minorish ones.

1.Unable to get Limewire installed, yes I have used the alternatives but do not like them, and folowed the tutorials well the feedback left with no joy.
2.Gimp I am not impressed with or Inkscape, I have always used Paint Shop Pro , I never do photos as such more logos and web graphics I use the paint programs for.
3.Network is a ngihtmare I have a hacked Xbox just so I can stream from my PC, it runs SMB, so on the xbox on windows all i do is go to SMB\\:192.168.1.222\MP3's all works tickety boo, but not a hope in SL.

Any suggestion on the above or replacements, as I have had enough of Windows as just got a call from my bank saying that my Internet Banking had been compromised, and thats with a firewall, Antivirus , Anti spyway and anti everything, so would love to go back.

Cheers

Yeah, i think that what you say is normal.

Windows is easier to use for end user!!!

In the last 2 months i have installed a lot of linux distro on my laptop (Acer Aspire 7520), and none of them have worked!! (wireless, sound, camara, mic, screen), the only one that has recognized my monitor/screen card has been Sabayon, but this is not perfect, no sound, no wireles, no camara, no mic, etc. (some of the distros were not able to start the installation and others do not finish the installation -including PCLINUX2007, Mandriva 2007, Mint, ZenWalk, slackware 12,pcbsd, etc.).

If you are looking for an end user linux distro, you WON'T find it yet!!!!!!!!!. It does not exist!

Windows is easier to install, to undestand, to configure, you will have more possibilities to find drivers, etc. etc.

Yeah, i know that there will be people complainnig about windows security, memory, viruses, etc., but actually Windows is easer for end users.

i am an end user and sl works great as long as i keep away from trying things i do not yet understand but i am learning. it is the same in windows.
do you learn? do you want to?
WINDOWS: Buy it, use it, break it, fix it, trash it, melt - upgrade it, charge it, pawn it, zoom it, press it, snap it, write it, get it, paste it, save it, load it, check it, plug it, play it, burn it, rip it, drag and drop it - stop. format it.

I am an end user too!!!!, but things shuold be simple, i just what to listen music and i can not! because SL is not recognizing my sound card, simple, i just want to get on line, but i can not because SL is not recognizing my wireless card, simple, i just want to chat too, but SL is not recognizing my camara and mic, etc. etc.

Yeah i agree with you!!, i want keep my self away form things i do not how to configure in SL, but why???????, should it be simple???????????, should it be "out of the box"???

learn??, of course i want to learn, last time i want to upgrade my kernel following the directions found in the manual, my SL installation got broken.... that's the key!.

It think the community should do complex things easier.

I do not want to use Windows vista, i want to use linux, but i haven't found a distro that works out of the box on my laptop, that's the key.
What i want to do?, mainly have my wireless working, and listen music, after that, i want to install eclipse and develop some things, that's it.

To be honest I have tried at least the top 30 of Distro watch and more, none of them would work one way or another but..........SL is the best yet, picks up my Sony Ericsson phone, Printer , TFT monitor, EHDD, Sound.... well you get th epicture everything.

The main reason I like it is for Amorack , I knwo the other itros have ti but SL is the best so far resolution everything.

I am an IT manager and to put it simply there would be no way I would get the office transfered over to linux the only linux machine i have it this one and my Sun Cobalt RAQ4 for the web server and file server thats it far too many apps for Windows to contend with never going to happen.

But I used to work from home a lot needing to use it as a test bed for windows but as this is nto the case anymore i am happy to play around and as I do not have any issues with backing up data etc. I can play and all I do not is play music watch a few videos and surf the web.

So A++++++++++++
