Two Questions Before I Install

Postby posi » Tue Aug 29, 2006 4:36

The first, and by far more important: Will my wireless card work? It uses the madwifi driver. Without it I would be rather screwed. IIRC, it worked fine with RR64 (intaller always crashed), but it has been a long time.

The Second: Will I have to setup grub to dual-boot with Ubuntu?

If it worked in rr64, your wireless will still work ;) We have a new installer that works 100x better than before :D

The installer will auto setup your grub to dual boot with your ubuntu install, just what carefully what's going on in the installer and you'll see where ;)

Well, I'm 90% sure it worked.

I hope fglrx works. Ubuntus x64 nover does for me, but it is about 3 release old. I heard the latest release has much more seemless x64 support.

Let me know how this turns out. I'm seriously considering replacing my Ubuntu with Sabayon, and I'm curious about the fglrx w/ x64.

Also, here's a quick question for all of you in the know: are Sabayon and Gentoo completely compatable? I.e., can I use all the Gentoo repositories and not worry about breaking my system?

This sounds like a great distro. I look forward to diving back into a Gentoo based distro.

Sabayon and Gentoo are 100% compatable. They even pull packages from the same repository :)

Yep...the only difference is that we add our own overlay to add a few more packages (think mandvd) and our themes and we preconfigure...that's about it :)

ATI and x86_64 is seemless in gentoo.....don't know why it wouldn't be elsewhere...you just have to make sure you're card is fully supported by the fglrx drivers (we have 8.28.8 right now)

Ok, sweet. That's about what I figured, but I just wanted to make sure.

I was only concered about the 64 bit driver because the last time I used 64 bit fglrx (and this was a long time ago), my card was only barely supported. Of course, that's an ATI problem and has nothing to do with Linux.

Oh, just an Xpress 200m. The 32 bit driver works beautifully and has for a while. I doubt the 64 bit version would be that different.
