I had to log in and say Great job with this fine distribution. :D You'd never know it was a release candidate. I've tried "Finals" that were not this polished!

I've tried both live dvd's and they run and install fine. Since I am relatively new to linux and have never been able to install Gentoo before I'm going to start over with the mini-cd x/86 so I can learn the ins and outs of Gentoo with a more basic install.

I have one question. Does Gentoo have anything similar to Kubuntu's alien ? The linux drivers for my printer Canon mp500 are only available from the japanese site and are in RPM. With Alien they can be converted to .deb packages for installation. Maybe I missed the proper man page(s) . I would appreciate any link or advice :)

Thank you,

Thanks :)

I would suggest seeing if kde already has your printer's driver in its database already, it has a bunch

if not:
rpm -ivh <packagename>

if rpm isn't instaled, emerge rpm :)

I got the same printer and according to LinuxPrinting.org

Canon MultiPASS C5000
Color inkjet printer, max. 720x360 dpi, works Partially
Recommended driver: bjc600

I been using that one, but it prints it smaller, doesn't use the whole page, when it should be- not sure what the deal is

Thanks for the responses 8)

Ty cvill64,
I'm pretty sure it isn't supported natively yet, it wasn't in kubuntu 6.06.1 nor on the live dvd's so those commands will be very useful.

Ty Wolfden,
I think my printer is different it's the pixma mp 500

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contr ... elid=11995

According to linuxprinter.org mine is supported after installing cnijfilter-common-2.60-1.i386.rpm
and cnijfilter-mp500-2.60-1.i386.rpm with a limited resolution of 600x600

Oddly it makes no mention of using the src rpm and failed to work in kubuntu, found this distro and had to try it. will post back after I get everything re-installed with results good or bad hehe
Atleast the scanner function is well suported by sane 0.11.3 or higher 8)

They have some bj 600 rpms as well as a common src.rpm's on the site perhaps one or more of them can be of use to you in trying to fix your problem you can get them at

ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/

Again Thanks :D

Found this:

Go to ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/
Download and install cnijfilter-common-2.60-1.i386.rpm
Download and install cnijfilter-mp500-2.60-1.i386.rpm

This will create the file:
/usr/share/cups/model/canonmp500.ppd

Point your CUPS software to the canonmp500.ppd file.

Tested on SuSE 8.2/CUPS/USB. My CUPS configuration is via SuSE's YaST2 system configurator utility. It auto-detected the printer (connected via USB) and the new ppd file, which it placed as an option with the other Canon drivers
