Need help with using tv as alternate monitor

Postby absolofdoom » Mon Sep 03, 2007 3:02

I recently got a 32" HD television. I am using it as a computer monitor now. I installed sabayon on my pc with it using the tv, and it worked perfectly! However, I would also like to be able to plug my laptop in when I am at my desk and use the tv as its monitor. I have tried doing it to see if it would work automatically, but sadly, it didn't. I expected this. So I searched google, but I really couldn't find any useful information. If anyone could shed some light on the matter, I would be very gracious.

Laptop:
Toshiba U205
TV:
Samsung LN-T3253H

Thanks in advance,
absolofdoom

P.S. Sabayon is the most awesome distro I have ever used. I went from using Kubuntu on my machines to using Sabayon on them very quickly.

LOL

Laptop if using ati we should have a "ati control panel" that could configure it for you , "nvidia has nvidia control panel" in I think 3.4 loop versions or later version of SL.
The port to the tv is it s-video round / DVI white big same as normal screens connector / hdmi out ?
I have no clue with Intel 945/950 inbuilt video cards , think they use 915resolution as the driver but should be able to do the same.

I have to press the FN + F8 on my laptop to activate the priority screen from lcd to external to both etc , you might have to do something similar check laptop manual or sometimes nvidia control panel can do this for you.

Hope this helps.

I have an intel graphics card... the port is a normal monitor port, the blue one. I know how to connect it to the tv, and I have already done that, but I get horrid resolution, it shows like a fifth of the screen on the tv. I know I probably have to edit xorg or something, and I have no problems with that, I'm not scared of config files or the command-line. However, if I don't know what to put, I can't fix it.

Sorry I didn't explain clearly enough last time. Thanks for trying to help. :D

http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-and- ... 06314.html
This link has it at 1366 x 768 resolution .
Not sure how to edit the xorg.conf to show the 2nd screen / external as 1366 x 768 and the normal laptop lcd as something else.

Someone else had a similar problem with only a part of the screen having picture. Could try the search right top side of this page to search the forum or check the wiki but might be under hdtv or something like that. The intel should be able to handle upto 2000x??? resl not sure but might also depend on the ram installed as the video card shares this or something, like this.

Hope it helps.

Thanks, but I still can't find any way to do this. I guess I'll just have to keep lookin'. Eventually I might find a solution.
