kmenuedit No Menu Edit and missing icons

I've been having this problem for a while now. I like to switch sessions occasionally to fluxbox so I'm not sure if this is related.

The problem I'm having is that I loose the icons under Applications from the KDE menu, and also Menu Edit no longer works. A simple emerge kmenuedit fixes it but only temporarily.

Any ideas ?

Not exactly a solution, but I found reference to using this command on the Gentoo forum.

kbuildsycoca --nonincremental

At least this is quicker than re-emerge of kmenuedit.
