Graphic card related issues

Postby swdw » Tue Aug 28, 2007 15:30

I ran into a couple of issues both running the live dvd and installing sabayon 3.4e

Basic system info-
ATi All-in Wonder 8500DV
AMD 1.5GHZ
Asus a7333 mb
Turtle beach voyuera sound card

On running the live dvd, the system correctly identifies the video card as ATi R200 8500DV. When at the desktop acceleration screen, it doesn't matter which option I pick (No accelaration or xgl), sabayon freezes at that point.

I took the plunge and tried to install via the graphical installer. When trying to detect the screen / card /monitor (can't tell which because . . .), the screen goes black and stays that way. The monitor reports a loss of video signal from the card. You can wait 1/2 hour and this will not change.

So . . . I used the text installer, figuring if things don't work I can install LinuxMint over it.

Happy to report sabayon installed and ran. Here's another issue though. On boot, the graphical login screen appears correctly. However, if I choose to just logout (not restart or shutdown), the screen goes black after logging off and I have to restart using the power/reset switches if I want to log in as a different user.

Yes, many are reporting that and it seems to be compiz fusion related. You can follow the howto upgrade C-F in the 3D Desktop forum and see if that fixes for ya, it did for me.

Works now, here's what I did:
Here's what I had to do to get sabayon to load w/ my Ati card. Warning- you will not have acceleration until after you install the program.

when the boot screen shows up, hit F5
add noaccelmanager to the options list and hit enter. the dvd will boot all the way. once at the desktop, I clicked on update installer. After that finished, you can click on install, and the graphical installer will load.

Once I installed Sabayon this way, it installed with acceleration and all options. tried a couple of the 3d games and they worked. They were a bit jerky, but then I have an old Ati 8500DV AIW which isn't the fastest card on the block ;)
