Sabayon/Gentoo on Sager 2090?

Postby Jarerex » Wed Aug 29, 2007 5:45

Hello all. I just purchased a Sager 2090 laptop, which is a rediculously recent laptop (released in july) and i am wondering how well Sabayon or Gentoo would integrate with the hardware? I know that Ubuntu takes about 5 hours worth of manual hacking to get it set up, and even then half the things don't work, but Gentoo and Sabayon are on the bleeding edge, so i suppose they would work far better, neh?

Can anyone comment on the likelyhood of Sabayon or Gentoo working out of the box, more or less? Is it true that Sabayon and Gentoo are the most user-modifiable/powerful/Bleeding edge distro's out there for the relatively new user? Am i crazy as hell for blowing my entire savings on an mint N64DD with 7 games?

I await all these answers and more.

Good Luck with your new laptop. The specs look great. Now to your questions. Lets start with Gentoo. Gentoo is an awesome OS, but it is NOT for the faint of heart. There is no 'out of the box'. Everything has to be selected, built, config files created, modified, etc, etc..... What is offers is full control over every aspect of your system. ( the kernel config file has over 2000 items). It is not impossible, but has a long learning curve. That is where Sabayon comes in.

Sabayon, is an easy to install Gentoo base with their own modifications, many bleeding edge. What it has is a great installer, super graphics, all the tools / apps you need. I currently run Sabayon on this T41 laptop, everything I need working.

So, what you need to look at is are there linux drivers for the hardware in your Sager.
Video - nvidia driver 100.14.11 is installed. geforce 8600 driver is 100.14.9 so you are covered.
Wireless - intel 4965 is supported in Sabayon. see link http://sabayonlinux.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=9194
WiredLan - I assume intel - should be no problem here.
Sata is supported
DVD-RW ok
Intel dual core is no problem
1680x1050 resolution is supported.
The things you would need to check is what Bluetooth, fingerprint reader, video camera is used. Each of these has support ( depending on hardware used ) in Sabayon.

Looks like you have a great OS solution - Sabayon...

Hope this helped. Have fun

Only recent hardware might not have drivers yet or flaky drivers ie: released in the past 30 days or the g33m / p35 / x38 intel chipset.
Just boot the live dvd 3.4e with F5 and "dodmraid xdriver=nvidia res=1440x900" or the res your screen goes , PS> do no use aiglx as it is somehow not liking the nvidia drivers in 3.4e even if upgrading / downgrading the nvidia drivers.

Only thing I can see is the wifi and tv tuner might need tweaking possibly or ndiswrapper + windows 4965 driver

Only difference from Dell 17" is wifi + nvidia + 965 motherboard instead of 945 both works.

Might want to look into this if hd is a bit slow:
There is Esata 34 express card slot adapters $30 with 2 ports and you can get a Thecus n 2050 $120 + 2x wd4000kd $80@ hd's and use this as raid 0 = more speed especially for games. Possibly looking at atleast double desktop 65MB/s hd speed = 120MB/s or more instead of laptop hd 33MB/s -> 54MB/s

The seagate 7200.2 is where the money is especially for games / compiles in gentoo.

Best of luck hope you enjoy it might need to get Graw 1 / Bioshock might even work in steam for linux on linux not sure. LOL
