Memory Stick detected but not mounted

Postby gbr » Wed Aug 29, 2007 16:28

Hi,

when I insert a MemoryStick, I get this in my log file:

But the stick does not mount. Any ideas? Here is the output from lspci

No problem.

To mount it manually, left-click the icon representing the flashdrive (in the lower right-hand corner of your screen) and select "Mount"

To set it up to do so automatically when you put a flash drive in the USB port, left-click the icon, select Properties, then go to the Mounting tab. Right below the "mountpoint" box is an option box labelled "Mount Automtically". Simply check this box and click OK. From then on, when you put a flashdrive in, it will auto-mount.

It doesn't bring up an icon either, so I can't mount it that way. From what I can see in the log, the device is detected, but nothing gets done with it.

Do you mean Sony MemoryStick? As in PSP or Sony Ericson phone? Those should be mountable...

WARNING: Sometimes I'm an idiot.

Re-reading your post, I realised I deal with so many newbies every day, that I automatically assume the most simple cause/effect/solution. Sorry about that. It's obvious now what you meant, now that I look back at it.

In short, it probably needs a low-level format. Gparted cannot do low-level formats.

I found a page about the same problem someone else had with their in Sabayon, and how they got it to work. This should walk you right through it.

It's a Sony MemoryStick. The device is formatted and contains files, but you did stir up a memory for me. I vaguely recall a previous memory device that was formatted FAT and didn't automount or detect properly. Once I formatted it FAT32, things went better. I'll try that out later.

Gerald

edit: Nope, that won't work. I don't get a device for the stick, no nothing to format.

As much as I hate to say this, you might find it easier to low-level format it, then re-format as FAT32 using... *shudder*... Windows.

I feel so dirty... I think I'll go have a shower to wash off the guilt...

I'm pretty sure I can format it with FAT32 using linux. I did it with my other stick.

Thanks for the help, it's appreciated!

Oh, formatting it in FAT32 isn't a problem for fdisk. It's the low-level format that prepares the way for a nice clean FAT32 format that's the problem, if this has the issue I think it does.
