HOW TO: Beryl On 3.4e

Postby Matthew Wiebelhaus » Sat Aug 18, 2007 16:49

I've seen a lot of people having problems with beryl so this should clear it up.

First: Log in as root and enable AIGLX from APPLICATIONS -> SETTINGS -> ACCELERATION MANAGER
Second: Go to konqueror and enter /usr/share/autostart and delete fusion-icon.desktop this will delete the annoying compiz-fusion, from enabling AIGLX, icon that starts compiz when you log in.
Third: Open a terminal from SYSTEM -> TERMINAL PROGRAM and emerge beryl and beryl-manager
Fourth: After emerging beryl and beryl manager go to APPLICATIONS -> SYSTEM and right click on BERYL MANAGER and add item to desktop.
Fifth: Navigate back to /usr/share/autostart and drag Beryl Manager from the desktop into /usr/share/autostart/
Sixth: Restart your computer and log in as Super User (or you normal user account) congrats you have beryl and can configure it via the gem in the system tray.

Why would you want beryl? Its not even being developed anymore, and theres way better effects with CF.

I've had the same experience as the OP re : stability. Beryl = no crashes or other weirdness on Sabayon, Ubunut, or Kubuntu. Compiz-fusion on all three = weirdness/crashes/etc.

Nice little how-to, by the way.

i follows the steps and I do see the beryl icon on load up but the actual effects doesn't. I actually got to go to Select Window manager -> Beryl and everything works perfectly.

Is there away to make it work automatically?

Thanks

P.S I find beryl is more stable. I have compiz on my laptop with Sab 3.4e and it's not working properly. Beryl works better but overall yes these eye candies are not stable but looks nice.
