Error: Cannot switch modes. Device is busy.

Postby kientzj » Thu Aug 23, 2007 20:07

I have an Intel 4965AGN internal wireless card. Sabayon detected it automatically and it will connect to some networks. I also just updated the driver with the most recent version from Intel. At my university however, the wireless mode is "master" and I cannot get my card to switch. After entering the essid and wep key, I type:

# iwconfig wlan0 mode master or
# iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc

I get this error:

Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Device or resource busy.

I would appreciate any help with this.

Thanks,
Joel

First thing to do with this card is to emerge --sync and emerge wpa_supplicant

it will likley downgrade the version to one that isnt as buggy

After that,
Code: Select all
$ wget http://intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/downloads/iwlwifi-0.1.10.tgz
$ tar -xvf iwlwifi*
$ cd iwlwifi((tab))
$ make
# make install

((Computer might hang here removing the module with the buggy old driver, would then require a reboot))

# rmmod iwl4965
# modprobe iwl4965

If the problem still persists, sometimes it helps to ifconfig wlan0 down before changing modes, though with the older wpa_supplicant and new drivers, i found networkmanager became useable. Id also check periodically for new drivers both in portage and at the website

Any probs, gimme a shout :)
