Linux game servers info new guide building ?

Postby WarraWarra » Wed Aug 22, 2007 21:40

I have been looking for a while now on obviously running a game server in linux and found several usefull link. I though to myself heck if we can use all this scattered + old + new info and make a guide in SL. I am sure someone would find some of this info usefull in future.
Hopefully anyone that has some experience about this or some of these games can comment and we can build a nice new part to the wiki dedicated to linux games / servers.
PLZ feel free to add links and or modify some of the info so that we can build current working guides / wiki parts for linux games + linux game servers.

We might even be able to host our own SL game servers for specific games ? SL clan ? or something if there is big enough demand.

I had issues 2 years ago with linux dvd and the 5 cd's in reality on the actual dvd + linux did not correctly follow the link to continue installing etc so I ended up at linux-gamers.net and they had a fix for this there.

Links needing to be updated / scrutinized then build into wiki's.

Linux-gamers.net already has some working game servers not sure if they are still active:

I even ended up looking for servers and found this for server / dedicated gaming server hosting :
us$29 to us$55 a bit expensive but they have very nice parts for the price likely the best parts for the price I have found.

The virtual servers at better price us$8pm to us$20 pm :

Just needing space I have seen http://www.megaupload.com/ and it has a 250gb space with unlimited speed supposedly and for us$69 for 2 years and might help for ftp downloads not sure about this.

I'm totally up for SL game servers, could bring in some sponsership cash. If you want to hit the sweet spot - BF2, CS:S, CS:1.6 and CoD2 would be my reccomendations. I would personally find it interesting to see sabayons performance for game servers (i may have a word with the owner of UKCS - http://www.ukcs.net Europes top CS servers - if he would try it out :)

We might also need someone that has the gamefiles to try out the servers / config's and add fixes to some of this.
Great idea.
