xorg.conf doesn't seem to be read [Solved]

Postby shieldfire » Wed Aug 22, 2007 4:15

I have a problem with my screen resolution.
In my xorg.conf file I have this:
# The favoured Depth and/or Bpp may be specified here

DefaultDepth 24

SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
ViewPort 0 0
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection

SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
ViewPort 0 0
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
ViewPort 0 0
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection

SubSection "Display"
Depth 32
ViewPort 0 0
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
EndSection

But in the KDE app "kinfocenter" going to the settings for xorg I find that the geometry for the screen is set to 1152 x 768 and default depth is 32. This is then what I get on the screen which means that all apps go off the screen to the right.
KRandrTray indicates two screens, screen one takes the metrics from kinfocenter (or at least displays the same) while screen 2 is the correct size. But I can't switch or disable screen one to be default.

Very confusing as this happens 98 times out of hundred.
Any suggestions on how to get the correct metrics on all boots?

It's a Siemens Lifebook C1110 with a Intel 810 graphic card with 15" XGA display (supports up to 1024x768 pixels).
I didn't have this problem with Sabayon 3.3 mini it started now with 3.4 (which I installed as it had new drivers for my wireless, which turned out to be horror, with constant freezes - that's the next problem to fix).

It would help if you would give more info as to what you have done

did you install the intel i810 drivers?

I don't know much about intel but the wiki has --> http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php? ... Resolution
not sure if that card works same way or not

which 3.4 are you running? what network card do you have?

Actually I had the unreasonable expectation that the installation routine would run that if needed, but I did it manually, and it added lots of 1600... entries to the list in KRandrTray. In KRandrTray I see my 1024x768 as screen 2 but there doesn't seem any way of selecting screen 2 as default. As to the NIC I've removed it as it caused lots of problems, its a DLink AG 660.

"Downgrading" to the stable tree solves the problem.
