Obviously it's a problem with Emerald/Compiz then. Other window managers work fine?

Have you tried using kdm w/ gnome to make sure it's not a gdm problem?

1). yes usually the other window managers are ok - gnome can usually logout fine
2). how do i go about using kdm w/ gnome?

Dude, it's not a flame post, just stating the obvious - it's not kdm/gdm related either - appears to be something with compiz and it's not crashing either. If you ssh into the machine you will see the X usage is sky high

I uninstalled compiz and it's all working like it should be

Logout is instant and back to the login screen - defiantely something compiz

Installed compiz-0.5.2 and I am not getting the log out problem. I don't have emerald installed either so and sounds like the git compiz-fusion is in a real mess

Hey wolfden I followed your guide which is a sticky for this forum about moving to compiz-fusion 0.5.2 and at first thought that my Gnome logout issue has disappeared. However, it is acting as usual -- system pretty much freezes when I go to logout. I can of course use CTRL-ALT-BKSPACE to kill X and get back to the login screen.

If you happen to come across a fix for this problem, please post it here.

I can confirm this problem. Logout never worked for me with compiz-fusion.

On both KDE and Gnome the systems hangs. Same thing happens when reloading window manager from fusion-icon.

I did, didn't solve it.

Perhaps downgrade Nvidia drivers.
