Switching X session sometimes freezes..

Postby FrozenFox » Sun Aug 12, 2007 8:49

Ok, my nerves are completely shot. I've looked through all the logs and places i can think of, and i still have had no success fixing this, so I hope someone can help..

In short, I run the xlaunch script

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-48 ... 196f5b2794

to play ut2004 in a new x session. But occasionally, it will freeze. There is no rhyme or reason that I have thoroughly tried to find in when it will freeze up on trying to switch, but it pretty much always does it going from the f8 (ut) session back to the f7 session. I get long strings of like 120 switches without problems or short strings of like 5 switches before it's frozen again, there's really no telling. In the rare case that it will let me on to the f7 session, the f8 session will be totally destroyed until i reboot, not even reloading ut w/ xlaunch will work. 99% of the time, i'm not so lucky and the whole system is locked up at a black screen waiting to go to f7. The last time it happened was Aug 12 2:26 probably around 40 seconds in, since there did not seem to be much time after my clock on my nightstand hit that from when i looked over at it. When i look in /var/logs/messages the time around then shows nothing useful. Nothing at all at that time, for that matter. Only:

Aug 12 02:20:01 localhost cron[9456]: (root) CMD (test -x /usr/sbin/run-crons && /usr/sbin/run-crons )
Aug 12 02:28:06 localhost syslog-ng[7227]: syslog-ng version 1.6.12 starting

Ie long before it froze and a ways after that when I rebooted the system.

Can someone PLEASE give me any clue as to what the problem might be (or where to find out)? Does anyone know? This is aggravating to NO end. I don't know if the problem is ut itself, x, xlaunch, whatnot or where else to look for a clue to answer that question. HELP?!

If it's of any use, I have everything sab comes with by default running, pidgin, ut2004 of course, kbfx, taskbar-compiz, and pretty much nothing else.. compiz fusion has its icon up, but the WM in it set to kde's. >_>
