How do I make VLC the default player for DVD's?

I can easily use properties to change the associated application for .avi's & such. I have done the same for the .bup & .ifo files on a DVD but I can't get the .vob files. Whenever I try the a requester comes up telling me I can cancel the operation. If I don't cancel nothing changes over time?

So, if someone can tell me what to edit & where to find the configuration file(s) to change the default DVD player I will be very happy!

usually what I do is find a file and than I can right click on it and choose open with and browse or choose the program I want to open with it and than select to always remember or make default.

What I want is when I put a DVD disk into my machine, for it to be automatically opened by VLC.

I have told the .vob files that VLC is the default, but still I get Totem when a disk is inserted.

Any ideas?

Could the following do it?

K Menu > Control Centre > KDE Components > File Associations

Click on e.g. x-mpeg, x-msvideo and the other video-related entries, click on VLC media player and click on Move Up

I am using Gnome, so unfortunately I can not follow your directions.

I would think that there is a file or two that just needs simple editing, like replace totem, with vlc, most likely with x-mpeg & x-msvideo involved.

I've already done that, it still brings up Totem on inserting a DVD in the drive?

I'm pretty sure that something needs to be edited to set the defaults for the disk.
