Wired Network Problem

Postby nagdingbrob » Sat Aug 11, 2007 17:48

My wired network connection isn't working (on a fresh install of x86-64 3.4a) and I'm not sure how to start fixing the problem. This same computer can connect fine when booting Windows. I listed the output of dmesg, lspci, and ifconfig below. Let me know me know if there is anything else I should try out. Thanks!

ifconfig:

No, I'm still unable to connect after net-setup. ifconfig also has the same output. Have any idea what I should try next?

I had his exact problem and after I ran net-setup and chose enter IP adress manually it worked. I used my DNS for both "DNS server" and "DNS Search Suffix". When I ran net-setup and chose "Use DHCP" the output of ifconfig didn't change.

My first problem was a driver bug which makes you remove and reload the driver into the kernel in order for the device to be recognized.

Anyways... I'm now trying to see why I'm getting "bus and class support for being resumed" and "eth0: link down" when attempting to bring up the interface with something like "ifconfig eth0 up". I'm now getting a 169.254.*.* address on DHCP attempts ...a generic response for failed attempts. In case it was the same problem as in the stickied thread, I installed the 3.0.6 DHCP version, but still no luck. net-setup doesn't seem to get it to work either under DHCP or manually entering an address.

[solved] apparentlly due to an XP driver shutting off a network setting on shutdown.

Re: Wired Network Problem

Can you elaborate on what XP did? I have pretty much the same problem. My board is the Intel DG33BU, same chipset as yours. I have Win Vista installed in a separate hdd and that has no issues accessing the Internet. I ran ifconfig eth0 and received no interface found. I can only guess that the Intel network was not even detected, so net-setup would be no good to me. My CPU is the E6550 with EM64T so I have to use the x64 install. I have just tried open SuSE 10.2 and that did not pick up the Intel network interface either. The board's BIOS is pretty plain so if you, or anyone else, know what to do in there I would appreciate any help.

I had to fiddle with some of the settings in the ethernet driver in Windows. Linux apparently isn't able to turn the setting back on according to some other forum. I believe it was wake-on-lan on shutdown, that had to be enabled.

In the BIOS, under the Power section, there is a 'Wake on LAN from S5' with options 'Stay off' and 'Power on'. It was set at 'Stay off' so I changed it to 'Power on'. Did not work. After a full re-install, still no network interface from the Intel on board LAN. I remember somewhere during my 3.3 install on my old P4, there is an option to set host name and dhcp settings and if memory is correct, that was before the first boot. None here for this 3.4e install.

I have a new Netgear GA311 card standing by and from what I have read so far, this card has a pretty good record with Linux. I will try other things, don't know what, before I install the Netgear card. I would prefer to use the Intel on board one. There has to be something I am not seeing in the BIOS. If you know of anything else or can point me to somewhere, my advance thanks.

This is extremely frustrating and issues like this is why every year I keep reading about being the year of the Linux desktop and not much came out of it. Two people who have been watching me struggle for the past three days with this new build decided they wanted nothing (for now) to do with Linux.
