!!! Incorrect kernel configuration options

3.4a does this:
# cp /proc/config.gz /usr/src/linux/config
# cd /usr/src/linux
"make menuconfig"
or
"make xconfig"
as the wifi part / ipw3945 is incorrect in /usr/src/linux/.config

Also check this:
# eselect kernel list
If eselect is not installed
# emerge eselect
Code: Select all
sabayonx86 ~ # eselect kernel list
Available kernel symlink targets:
  [1]   linux-2.6.22-sabayon *
sabayonx86 ~ #

If you have several options for kernels choose the one you want according to it's number and make permanenet.

# eselect kernel set 7
Doing above this should fix it for you. Recompile the kernel not sure if necesary as you could likely get away with (check syntax)
make modules_install
update-modules --force
then copy the new bzImage or initrd not sure from /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/ folder.
Have to check and verify this info I give you . I do not have the how-to page in front of me right now.

Hope this helps.

I'm now writing from sabayon, it worked.
I just compiled and installed manually the ipw3945 module
then
modprobe -r iwl3945
copied ipw3945d-1.7.22.tgz in /usr/portage/distfiles
then
emerge --ask ipw3945d
modprobe ipw3945
and
iwconfig now shows wlan0.
I know will try to configure it to start at boot.
thank you all

I cannot prevent iwl3945 form loading at boot time!!
I tried to add it in /etc/modules.d/blacklist but it didn't work, it still loads automatically and I can load it too with modprobe...

Ok it worked.
I didn't put "iwl3945" in /etc/modules.d/blacklist i put "blacklist iwl3945" in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and hen i think I ran update-modules.

Thank you all :D

I installed 3.4e (this happened in 3.4a as well) and had a weird problem with my ipw3945. NetworkManager starts with ipw3945d. KNetworkManager can see the AP and get an IP. I could download via http. ftp, p2p, BT, and ping by hostname outside the lan . However I could not pull any webpages. I never figured out why this was happening, so I just shut NetworkManager down and ran net-setup on my wireless device. Now I have full web browsing capability. Here is the code for those of you who need it:
Code: Select all
su
/etc/init.d/NetworkManager stop
rc-update del NetworkManager default
net-setup

EDIT: After a few days of testing this method, it did not turn out as well as I had hoped. While this is the "oldie but goodie" way of setting up a gentoo iface, it doesn't seem to work for very long. Im right to where I started except now my wired eth0 doesn't work either. 3.4loop3a worked best for me...Why did I have to go and change it?

EDIT: I am such an e-tard!! Turns out that I forgot that I had KTorrent running in the system tray with about 32 active torrents using up alot of bandwidth. I guess that you cant download a bunch of torrents and browse the web at the same time because there is alot of overhead bandwidth being used when running a BT client (trackers, etc..). So, just to clarify, there is nothing wrong with the ipw3945 drivers in SL x86_64 3.4a/e.
