Window decorations

Postby treaz » Tue Aug 07, 2007 8:53

I tried changing window decorations from the appeareance panel, don't remember exactly where it was.

Anyway I tried to go from evil red to crystal. I applied, nothing happened. Restarted kde, nothing happened. Disabled windows decorations from compiz, nothing happened.

I don't really need the exact thing to do, give me a link to a manual that covers these things. The kde help gives far too little info on things like these.

Thanks,
Treaz

Hi

Just a couple of questions?

1) Have you got compiz-fusion up and running. i.e. is the compiz-fusion icon in the taskbar and do you have "wobbly windows"?

2) What graphics card do you have?

3) Did you try to change from evil red to cyrstal in the kde control centre?

cheers

Dave

p.s. There is a section in the forums called "Off Topic"

Yes, nvidia 6100 equivalent, yes

1) Compiz fusion is running (3d cube, wobbly windows and stuff)

2) I have an integrated graphics card: nvidia 405 chipset= 6100 equivalent (although I don't see how can this be important). Oh, yeah, when I disabled windows effects from compiz the upper part of the windows (with the close, minimize and aximize buttons) disappeared completely.

3) That is the exact thing that I tried and didn't had any effect.

Cheers

Hi

Basically there are two ways that you can change the window borders/title bars etc.

First, make sure compiz is working.

If you right-click on the compiz-fusion icon in the system tray and go down the list to "select window decorator" you get to choose between "emerald" and "kwin".
If you choose "kwin" then you should be able to change the window decoration from the kde control panel, like you were doing before. If you choose "emerald" then you have to right-click on the compiz-fusion icon (again) and change via "emerald theme manager"

Best to check which one is enabled. Sometimes neither is enabled for some reason and you can run into problems.

Cheers

Getting closer to a solution

Postby treaz » Wed Aug 08, 2007 8:19

Hi

Ok, compiz is working. I changed the window decorator to kwin (or whatever it's name is). The window decorations disappeared completely. I then went to kcontrol panel, to appeareance and themes, to window decorations, and tried to change them, but with no results (nothing happened). So I had to revert to emerald as a window manager and choose a theme from their pack.

Still, this is not the complete answer as I have switched to sl because it is said that everything is customizable. Could you try and do what I did to see if it's only an isolated problem?

Thanks,
Treaz

Hi

Changing to kwin works fine on mine. I have however upgraded compiz-fusion several times from the one that was released with SL 3.4a. This has fixed many of the original problems I had with Compiz-fusion.

All the best

Dave

I think you mean the red bar at top of KDE windows:

go to KControlCenter, Appearance & Themes, Styles, then click on configure (by default the Polyester theme, dunno about others), on the Advanced tab uncheck or change the custom color for the Menubar Emphasis option.
This works for both, emerald and kwin.
