Processor Upgrade Opinions

Postby fofo412 » Mon Aug 21, 2006 19:51

Hello all! I currently have this mobo http://usa.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=25&model=165&modelmenu=1 and it supports 64 CPU technology (as long as I stay in my limits). I am interested in upgrading from my P4 3.0Ghz 800mhz FSB to the same specs, but 64 bit.

I know I can do this with just a new chip, and keep my mobo. Does anyone know if my board will support a dual core processor? or if I have to stick with something similar to what I have with EMT64?

Is the upgrade even worth it? or would I be best to use this machine for awhile, and get an AMD in a couple of years?

Thanks for the input![/url]

Yes you can if you get a 915 intel chip, but I don't hink any of those are 64bit...I could be wrong though, I'm particular for dualcore amd and think with what you have you're good for now.

Yup I agree with cvill64 - save up and get yourself a nice dual core system, nothing wrong with what ya got.

if 2.6.17 kernel supports i975, then SL RC2 supports that.

oh, if intel dual core chips are 64 bit, there is support using the EMT64 smp kernel or just plain ol' genric64, not sure if acpi support for them is in yet, but I know they'll run just fine :)
