Well I downloaded the Sabayon 3.3b mini edition and try to boot. When it loads the kdm I see nothing else than a blank screen. Exactly the same problem as previously. So it is something else. I do not know what. I just wanted to let you know, because I had never had troubles with the specific NVIDIA drivers.

I tried to boot "graphical install" from Sabayon 3.3b but I soon met again the blank screen. No way to do something. If I boot in text mode and install as ususal, then after the first boot I will still not be able to fix anything because I will again see the old black screen.

Any ideas left to see?

"your nvidia is also supported on nvidia-legacy...you should too emerge nvidia-legacy-drivers"
Everything works that I need to work and I am quite happy with Sabayon 3.4. Sometime in the next sixty days I'll upgrade my video card.

Well it doesn't work for me though. As I told you before I need Beryl. Compiz doesn't work unless you use the 96XX Nvidia series of drivers. These drivers however end up with a blank screen for me. And I am quite unhappy about that. But Sabayon 3.4 doesn't support miniEdition yet. And Beryl is out as well. My choice would be also Sabayon. But it doesn't seem to work. Noone can say more... Any ideas to go along ...

Can you still access the console?

Try Ctrl+Alt+F1.

What happens?

If you can get to the console, you could just emerge the nvidia legacy drivers from there, couldn't you?

No because the Sabayon 3.3.b miniedition for x86 has a problem in the anaconda installer. I cannot do graphical install so I go with the text install. And it issues a problem with anaconda installer and stops. I forgot about that problem. I also had it in the past when I tried to install Sabayon on another x86 machine. The x86_64 version doesn't have such problems. So the only possible solution is to install Sabayon 3.4, and then try to install the legacy drivers and then emerge beryl. Does this have any potential of working?

Have you tried emerging nvidia-driver-96xx? There are several versions of the 96xx series drivers in portage on sabayon 3.4

Well for starters you should disable kdm at boot so you dont lock your computer up when it starts. If it doesnt lock up then hit ctrl-alt backspace to kill the x server then ctrl-alt-f1 to switch to a tty. from there you can start debugging/playing around with it . maybe you know all this though.

I too have an nvidia card. It works okay-ish, but its the first and last nvidia i will ever own. all the hype around nvidia being linux friendly is a crock. ati is no worse than nvidia when it comes to drivers and linux in my eyes, i never had as many problems with ati than i do with nvidia now

guys, since it took you some time to reply I created another post named:

Beryl, Sabayon 3.4 and NVIDIA legacy drivers and it is located here:

http://www.sabayonlinux.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9149

The issue is:

1) All the 96XX NVIDIA drivers do not work for me,
2) It is impossible to have compiz working with Nvidia,

So I installed Sabayon x86 3.4 and I also un-installed the Nvidia driver series 100something
and installed the Nvidia legacy drivers 7184. Those work fine, the only problem is that if the
X server loads the Nvidia modules then Suspend in RAM doesn't work as expected. After Suspend
in Ram I cannot get (after pressing any button) the window where I should enter my password I see
just a blank screen.

Anyway I would be interested to download and install Beryl. Somebody told me that Beryl should work with those old NVIDIA drivers. The question is: if I run (emerge beryl) will that be enough or there are other stuff I should do as well?
