VirtualBox prob [Not solved, but understood ... probably]

Postby fretts » Thu Aug 02, 2007 14:43

Hi all,

I am trying to create a virtual XP machine using VirtualBox.

The machine creates ok up until the point I need to install the OS (i.e. after the mini wizard talks about temporarily mounting the CD drive), at which point I get the "Starting Virtual Machine ....0%" dialogue, and no further progress.

I am in the VboxUsers group.

I was forced to specify the nokvm on initial install of 3.4a, is that related?

Many Thanks for any help

I think very much so.

Do you have an HP dv laptop? You may need to activiate the virtualization in the BIOS. This was a problem for me when I tried booting the liveDVD. Without the virtualization enabled in the BIOS, kvm totally b0rks the system, hence it's necessary to use the "nokvm" boot option. I would try activating virtualization in the BIOS first and setting up kvm in the boot options. Then try to set up the Virtualbox Machine.

Cheers Bryan

Hi there,

No I have a non branded PC but based on on a Gigabit motherboard.

I will have a look in the bios though, so thanks for that.

What do I need to do to reinstate KVM, assuming the bios was the issue, I presume I dont need to reinstall, you mention boot options?

Thanks
Paul

Hmmm, thin I at least understand the prob, if not what to do about it.

It seems a lot of Gigabyte mother-boards have the option to enable virtualization hidden and therefore inaccessible :(

Could replace board etc etc ... grrrr.

Hi

You have add "nmi_watchdog=0" (without quotes) to your boot up parameters in your /boot/grub/grub.conf file haven't you?

Just thought I'd check.

All the best

Dave

p.s. Virtualbox should work fine without kvm or any virtualisation turned on in the bios. It uses software and not hardware virtualisation (I think) :D

Hi

I moved this topic into the "Virtual Managers" forum. You might get more luck there and it should be there really :)

All the best

Not sure if you saw the post I made about the virtual hd being created takes ages and then you still have to format it. That is why I posted the 20gb / 1.5mb rar already formated to ext3 hd so the install process will go faster and the creation of partitions + format them is down to 3 min's avg.

I just boot with the default cd / dvd settings except add "res=1024x768" so it stayes in a window on my laptop 1440x900 screen.
Everything else works .
