Not even sure you can upgrade from below 3.3 to 3.4a as before 3.3 there was old code / bugs that makes this a nightmare.
For the time bug that is normal just go into the live dvd again and then using this link below copy the time zone you are in to /dev/sda?/etc/localtime after mounting the hd.

You could have just backed up your /home/yourname folder and then do a clean install. Once inside the installed version then just login as that old user after copying that /home/yourname old folder back.
This is a way to get it working just not sure how correct . Might have to first "passwd -d yourname" to remove the password and then later recreate the password with "password --help" and the option + username.
Have to get info from someone that knows how to keep userfolder during upgrade.
