#emerge nero-something that works? please? [Solved]

I have searched far & wide, gaining knowledge & links for future reference.

I found that Nero 3.0.0.0, has an ebuild, I learned about & did the following:

#emerge --sync && layman -S

#emerge eix && update-eix

#eix nero

* app-cdr/nero
Available versions: (~)3.0.0.0 {doc}
Homepage: http://nerolinux.nero.com
Description: Nero Burning ROM for Linux

* app-cdr/nero
Available versions: (~)3.0.0.0 {doc}
Homepage: http://nerolinux.nero.com

Now what I need is:

#emerge {nero-something that works?}

Can someone please educate me, I have spent a lot of time researching & I tried some seemingly obvious ways to call nero, to no avail.

I know I'm so close!

Not sure but could work.
Check /etc/make.conf if the ~x86 is there then it should work as I presume the ~ before the nero number means unstable ~amd or ~x86 same for 64bit.

Then just "emerge nero"
If you have the option set to stable amd / x86 and not to ~amd ~x86 then changing this ~ should work not sure how to make that option permanent or that emerge uses it as default ?

Could also use the
" USE="~x86" emerge nero "
replacing ~x86 with your cpu type. ~x86 , ~amd or similar.

Have to verify this info + how-to. Also not sure if nero is any good as several persons had bad luck in windows lately with nero , just use k3b

I looked around on the web for more clues, looked at Gentoo-Portage - Search, which was no real help, the Gentoo Linux Handbook, which also was not a help!?

I looked at man pages, for various associated commands, I looked into usr/portage/apt-cdr/nero
which didn't help either.

All I wanted to know was the syntax for nero & emerge.

I tried some more variations & eventually I got it!

# emerge =nero-3.0.0.0

The = sign & it's position was the key.

I would have thought that typing emerge at the prompt would give a simple explanation of how to do this. The software must be too complicated to allow such help I guess.

It is also possible that I missed it too.

Anyway Nero is now listed in Gnome's => More Applications => New Programs => Nero, so it is victory at last. & it has been some hours too!

By the way, how do I edit the title to say [SOLVED] ?
This thread could save a Gentoo beginner a lot of time.

Hi wolfden, I tried every way I could think of, often more than once! lol

I tried emerge nero, it did not work for me.

I have been into the portage guide too.

New problem:

I can not get the nero to display it's icon on Gnome's main panel?

I have tried Add to Panel => Application Launcher, but nero is not displayed. I tried =>Custom Application Launcher, but I don't seem to be able to find the right nero file.

The following:

usr/share/applications/nero

will run the file if I double click on it, but it won't work with the =>Custom Application Launcher ?

Any ideas?

I always had trouble with k3b.

Perhaps the current windows problems are Vista related.

I've been using NeroLinux for over 18 months, with the rare trouble I've ever had being media related.

Versions 3 is perfect. I could ask for nothing more from burning software. The price of NeroLinux is a fraction of what is charged for the windows version too which is nice!

& it just did what it was supposed to, so I have no idea why nero cost me half a day?

I did learn things though.

Each to our own, its always nice to have somewhere else to go to. I'll end up on K3b, or some other free title one day, though right now I'm perfectly catered for by Nero.

and then remember, of course, that you need a working serial for Nero, not so? Me have one but don't ask me about it ...

and as a lesson when you try to emerge something in gentoo & sabayon try to do that using his full name, like app-cdr/nero not nero only. In this way you will have less surprises. Like me doing this:
