display out of limits!! help!!

Hello Im very new to linux and barely understand anything about it yet but it sounds like it might be the new leading OS from what iv been reading. any way my problem I downloaded and burned the full sabayon 3.4 x86 -64 to a dvd and decited to try the live mode running it without installing it.

I have a self built tower
AMD 64 X2
ATI x600
2 gb Ram
250 GB Maxtor sata drive
Sony dvd r/rw
sony monitor max res 1280 x 1024

any way it began loading and about at the end of loading the screen went black and then an error, "display out of limits" I at first thought it was my monitor because its fairly old, but after reading the other forum topics I dont think thats the problem. If anyone can help me I really dont know anything about changing the resolution or anything in linux, and im not even sure thats the problem.
