irritating desktop behaviour (windows behind the taskbar)3.4

don't know if this is normal (which i hope not), or if it is easily adjustable (can't find an option), but the fact that applications can sit behind/under the taskbar is bloody annoying!

eg - Running Sabayon on my 1366x768 TV at 1280x768 (won't detect the proper res), using AIGLX on a KDE desktop, if i open an application the bottom of it will frequently be hidden under the taskbar.

you know, that useful part of the application where critical buttons are commonly found.

in windows, applications are constrained to the desktop area that is not already occupied by the taskbar, which is a good behaviour.

how can i make Sabayon behave properly?

p.s. is there some sab equivalent of SAX2 that will give me a GUI to input the screens true resolution?

Hi

First off, when you open an application, If you click on the "Maximize" button does it still appear behind the taskbar panel?

Second,If you go to kcontrol->Desktop->Panels and select the "Hiding" tab, is there a circle in the option that says "Allow other windows to cover the panel" ?
If there is then there shouldn't be. The option "Only hide when a panel-hiding button is clicked" should be selected.

Third, If neither of these two fix it then I suspect it's a problem with compiz-fuzion. It is still in alpha stage (I think, or maybe beta stage). I'm experiencing a lot of annoying problems at the moment with kde and compiz-fusion.

You should enter your exact desired resolution in the appropriate monitor subsections in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Regarding the issue... what do you do if the window that appears when you open a program appears too high on the screen and you can't get to the upper side of it so you can move it. I have tried to right click on the program in the taskbar and chose move, but it didn't work. Sugesstions?

LE: Of course I tried restarting the programand all was ok, but there's got to be another way (the right way). I mean, the it professional way.

^I just click on the Panel and drag it to the side of the screen and dock it vertically, which lets me click on the previously-hidden title bar of the window so that I can drag it down or re-size the window. Then I drag the Panel back to its original horizontal position at the top of the screen.

It's a bit strange that the title bar appears above the height of the desktop anyway. That's happened to me a couple of times but I have just closed the program and reopened it and the window has appeared in the correct position.

^If a window is not Maximised, SL lets you re-size (drag) the top of the window title bar to the top of the screen, which is underneath the top Panel, and release the mouse button. That's one possible way to get into the situation described by treaz. It can happen if one is not careful, and has happened to me a few times.

If I'm e.g. running an rsync command to backup my HDD, or browsing a particular Web page then I don't want to close (as opposed to minimising) a window. But, if losing what is in the window is not important then closing it and relaunching is one option. However, if one minimises the affected window (right-click on the window's icon/title in the Main Panel) and then maximises it, the window's title bar is visible below the top Panel but the window is Maximised. As soon as one clicks on Restore Window the title bar is again under the top Panel. So my guess is that this is why treaz is asking the question.

I get it know I think when this happened I took a long winded route and made the panels disappear from the desktop so I could grab the window behind it and then made them reappear again. he he
luckily, with compiz-fusion, I don't seem to be able to run into this situation anymore; I just tried.
