Network Manager error BIG TIME

Postby munichmachine » Mon Jul 30, 2007 11:07

I'm very sorry that I have to write this.

I shut down my Acer laptop last night after a lot of work getting things in order on this distro. About 6 hours flat, and after 2 reboots with manual resolv.conf editing I removed :

networkmanager and knetworkmanager with no success getting network connections

Then I emerged both packages back, thinking there has to some linking problems in x64 version, but no success.

Knetworkmanager is not working, in "KDE system manager" there is no network setup with ip addresses and DNS settings.

And this "shit" is tampering with resolv.conf as I write this !!!!!!! SOLVE THIS ISSUE IN ENGLISH PLEASE !

So I searched for this and found that other people had same problems with no correct solution in english.

So I will wait for a later version with corrected Network Suite, going back to Ubuntu.

I have even more to write about this.

Even if I write nameserver manually, all my SMB share connections are broken !

And I can't use "search" domain listing in resolv.conf ! because then I see the local network but NO internet connection is possible !

It seems like each distribution has its own major hang-up, wifi/connectivity being Sabayon's.

That hang up has caused me to go into waiting mode, though, not "I'm out of here" mode. Sabayon is just too good to give up altogether on as I have with many other distros with show stopper problems.

I contributed my problem in other topics, and I'll wait and try the various tips.

I am also contributing to Sabayon. Like I said, it's just too good to put behind me.

Hang in there; I'll bet your problem will be resolved here.

I'm also wondering if you have a bad CD burn; did you match the md5sum? Did you burn the DVD or CD at a nice slow rate to prevent errors?

This is because we don't have KNetworkConf (though it should be; it's not included the KDE metapackage that exists in portage.) I have spoken out about this before but everyone seems to be happy using net-setup, which is a script that runs in terminal. As root, run:

Code: Select all
net-setup

And see if that helps you out.

Are you behind a router or are you using a static IP address? Is this a wireless or wired connection?

I'm behind one of the best hw firewalls Netgear ProSafe VPN FVS328 with updated firmware.

I burnt the DVD on 8x on an 18x Pioneer burner.

I used net-setup several times, but my local DNS-server + DNS server in the router did not stick after a restart with an empty resolv.conf as the result every time.

But I will hang in there :) I will download x32 version and put on my workstation instead of my laptop.

I'm now using CentOS 5.0 on my Acer laptop now with KDE manager, what a joy. Nothing, nothing is wrong. So I had to check everywhere from DMESG to ....... every .conf file. Nothing is wrong with this. Just ENE SD-card reader don't work, but that don't work in any distro as ENE SD-Card reader through ENE PC-Card interface doesn't have linux drivers to it. But everything else works out-of-the-box.

check to see if it's just version 3.4, i'm having luck using 3.3 and upgrading the apps

the only other suggestion i got was to backpedal the kernel because the networking is hard coded on the kernel, so check 3.3, if it works, back step the kernel to the one used in sabayon 3.3

Good luck,

also would love an answer myself other than the ones i gave you, but it has to do with the kernell upgrade

amen! just be glad u don't hv an HP machine as I do...all ndiswrapper, fw-cutter, mod-this/mod-that,
over three (3 ea. editions) *still* don't work; plus: knetworkmanager/networkmanager continues
to be the sole means of managing wifi on the moment. then there's berlios, wim's bios pages
(if u wish to risk bios crash!), etc. moreover, broadcom is quietly removing references to actual
drivers from corporate search/support http pages. search there and all u get are links to other
pages that mention the driver, but no drivers!! hp & broadcom need to burn at the stake for this.
take care & good luck. obtw: check acer refs at ubuntu forums, they may help; YMMV.
Have A Healthy, Prosperous Day!
