No direct rendering&XGL unnaturally slow on ATI

Postby Woodgypsy » Sun Jul 29, 2007 17:31

I recently installed Sabayon3.4 32bit and I think something is going wrong with my install. When I am not using XGL, it appears that direct rendering is not working, as .avi files play very sluggish and even moving around open windows is sluggish. Even though it says it is working, and fglrx seems to be working.

glxinfo | grep -i direct
direct rendering: Yes

fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9700 PRO
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6474 (8.38.6)

Also, when I enable XGL, KDE becomes unnaturally slow, to the point it is not usable at all. Even typing root password for starting accel-manager (to turn off XGL again) takes several minutes. Compiz-fusion does load on startup with XGL unlike others with ATI, but still there's no window decorations. Here's my lspci. Dmesg and xorg.log coming in next posts. I did post this on 3D part, but I am posting here again as I seem to have non-3D problem as well. Thanks for the help.

The fglrx driver often does not work properly on install -- emerge ati-drivers and see if that works.

What card do you have? Motherboard or laptop model?

I emerged ati-drivers, however, it didn't help. :(

I am using Radeon9500pro AGP. I am using BIOS which enabled overclocking, that is why it reads as 9700. Thanks.

Code: Select all
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering

Did you disable XGL using the Acceleration Manager? This line in Xorg.0.log is common on XGL-configured displays. Until you run a 3D desktop manager (such as compiz/beryl/compiz fusion) you will get ridiculously slow window drawing (I'm surprised you were even able to launch a video.)

If you don't want to use a 3D desktop manager, use DRI (disable XGL.)

If you want to use a 3D desktop manager, but get very slow performance under ATI, enable Loose Binding.

Yes, I did disable XGL - KDE is way too slow for me otherwise. So is it natural then? In DRI, at least its usable...Sadly, I don't know much about ATI in Linux as I was mostly on laptop which had Nvidia. I think I am going to try loose binding, thank you.

try adding this
Code: Select all
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
to your xorg.conf inside "device" section

It seems to have helped with video playback. Thank you. I guess the overall slowness is ATI problem then - cannot wait to install it on Nvidia laptop. :D

That's because under XGL you have to run Compiz Fusion.
