Cannot get external USB2 HDD working under sabayon 3.4

Postby FulciLives » Sat Jul 28, 2007 4:45

Hello !!!

I am new to sabayon and recently installed the DVD image of version 3.4

Everything seems to be working well but I can't get my external USB 2.0 HDD working (it is a PATA HDD).

I have attached a file which is a screen snap shot of the error message I am getting.

Please note that I am also fairly new to Linux in general.

Did you do what the error message tell you to do? I mean force mount. It asked you to type a command in a terminal. copy and paste the command into a terminal and then let us know what happened.

I tried that and it didn't work ... I basically got a very slightly different msg but it essentially said the same thing.

And both times I get this very annoying "glass smashing" sound that has to be the worst sound int he world next to nails on a chalkboard.

Since I used sabayon 3.4 last I was in Windows XP Pro and turned the USB HDD on and off etc. and the next time I used sabayon (there now) I turned it on and got the same msg as the one I posted BUT this time when I did the copy and paste of the terminal command it worked.

My USB HDD is mounted and I can read files from it (NTFS).

Go figure ???

I have to say that of all the Linux distros I have played with (and by NO means am I a Linux pro) I really like sabayon.

BUT the whole emerge/portage/portato thing is driving me insane. The other distors I used had synaptic or some other similar thing that made updating VERY easy.

Portato seems to not work correctly. It crashes. It makes no sense. It is not intuitive in the least.

I'm still willing to "play around" a bit but I have a feeling sabayon may eventually be the way I do NOT go simply because of the lack of an easy-to-use package updating "thing".

That would be a real shame so I'm not giving up yet.

But so far I'm having very little luck understading the whole emerge/portage/portato thing.
