SL3.4 made for virtualisation?it does work when used right;)

Postby dyingmuppet » Sat Jul 28, 2007 0:49

Hi all,
first of all, finally 3.4 has come to life :D ..but still with some trouble I say...
First Sabayon 3.4 should be the most powerful virtualization machine but it seems it isn't...
I've tried to install vmware via emerge but it just didn't install because of a bug with kernel 2.6.22, then I tried the Virtual Machine Manager that came with sabayon, Xen didn't work, but that didn't work in 3.3 also, then I tried Qemu and that did start up and I could set up a drive and all, but when I started the installer it said I don't have Qemu installed...

now I was looking for qemu via emerge -s and found that qemu wasn't installed so I tried to install it with: emerge qemu after that it ended up with an error that it cannot build with gcc 4, only gcc 3...
I don't think downgrading gcc is a good idea... so I'll stay out of virtualization for now on my lap... :(

anyone with solutions??
thanks so far... if you need more info.. just post what you need...

Xen needs to be installed

Virtualbox should work out of the box as it does here

vmware server should get fixed shortly

you can downgrade kernel to use vmserver, other wise it will get fixed. That is the problem running bleeding edge, you get the effects of things being broke right away.

BTW, U do know that your CPU must have special recent virtualization instructions before U can use Xen and make a virtual beast...... Right??

@Wolfden.. thanks for the tip but I don't prefer to downgrade my kernel just for installing VMware... that would be a waste, so I'll just wait till the patch arrives at portage ;)

@DarkSurf.. I have a Dual-Core AMD Turion TL56 processor in my laptop so it should be compatible with virtualization ;)
and btw.. it all worked on SL 3.3 accept for Virtual Machine Manager and Xen ( or I did set it wrong..) Qemu did work..
