3.4a_x86_64 on ASUS A6Tc (warming / fan issue)

Postby Miro » Fri Jul 27, 2007 13:59

Hi,

Congratulations for Sabayon, this is the first 64-bit distribution (3.4a) that actually works reasonabilly well out-of-the-box in my laptop (ASUS A6Tc) withoyt even needed the noapic option.

I have not tested everything yet, but at least Wifi is working.

However, there is something that worries me: the processor gets hotter than it does with Ubuntu or Windows and, in fact, the fan never stops. Related issues have been reported on Gentoo fora.

Any clues on what could the problem be and if this is dangerous for the computer?

It freezes

The computer freezes after a while (like an hour). It's maybe the graphics card. Eventually you can restart the X server with CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE. But a couple of times the computer was completely irresponsive and I had to power it off the nasty way. Maybe it's a GPU driver issue, but this is a clean installation...

I think this is the end of my Zabaglione experience. I'll go for OpenSUSE and I'll see what happens...

Cheers

According to this Gentoo Wiki article, users of the A6Tc have had trouble with this in the past. It's a cooling fan though (much better to have the fan running wide open than not at all) and the only real issues it should be presenting are the noise and the battery life it consumes.

It shouldn't be causing lockups.

What kind of graphics card are you running? Latest drivers? Are you running Compiz Fusion or just the standard 2D desktop?

OpenSUSE.. sucks. :?

ears wide-open

I have a nVIDIA GeForce 7300 and it never had stability problems with Ubuntu (neither with the Ubuntu package nor with the latest ones downloaded from the nVIDIA site). Which drivers did Sabayon installed? I don't know, I haven't have the time to find out and now I'm kind of reluctant to boot on Sabayon again.

About OpenSUSE, I have no idea. That's what they recommended me. I have tried several distros this far. I had no problems with my old laptop (well I did with Fedora, but not with Scientific Linux or Ubuntu) but it got stolen.

I have Unbuntu in a 32-bit desktop at work and I'm very happy with it. The problem with the laptop is that I couldn't configure the Wifi card (even ndiswrapper wasn't working) and none of the Flash plugins was working. There were also minor issues with the sound card.

I think Sabayon is great but, unfortunately, a 64-bit laptop can still be a tricky issue. I was very naif to think that it was going to work straightforwardly. So I will have to go back to the old manual-editing configuration stuff. Anyway, if you know of any distribution that is more likely than others to work on this hardware, please, let me know, my ears are open...
