Sabayon 3.3 to 3.4 - Problems

Postby tekwyzrd » Thu Jul 26, 2007 0:47

After installing v3.2 (including the optional games) I logged in using my pre-existing user /home directory. Problems were immediately evident. First, a number of application shortcuts on my desktop no longer worked, including the sauerbraten shortcut. Apps I KNOW were installed. Many in the applications menu were broken, and many installed games were absent.

Then, after a reboot and login I saw two compiz icons in the system tray. Then, when trying to launch azureus I found it not working.

So, after a bit of work I renamed the user directory, deleted the user, created it again, and had kuser create a new user directory. No matter what I did, the best I could get WITH the proper application menu entries was a default kde user directory (standard single panel kde desktop layout). I manually recreated the Sabayon layout and am currently migrating my old info a bit at a time.

Even so, a problem still exists. Azureus still doesn't work. I re-emerged it, and it still doesn't work.

I have to wonder if critical java components are missing.

I assume you used the upgrade method - which one?

The upgrade method has been reported many times as not being good. It takes a long time to do and often crashes during upgrade. It seems to also leave a system unstable. Pending on which method you used, it will remove your stuff also. 6th sense is better with that but nothing is guaranteed to be there when your done.

I always and always recommend to backup, fresh install and than restore backup. If you are world updated, you don't have to ever reinstall.

I didn't use the upgrade method. As with the upgrade from 3.26 to 3.3 I formatted all partitions but my /home and did a fresh install, setting up the primary user with the same name and password.

Before any one mentions it. I checked the md5sum before burning, and set k3b to the slowest speed offered for my dvd burner. 6x was the slowest allowed, and it's always worked fine before. The blank disks are the same brand as I always use (verbatim). The same burner and blanks as I used for the 3.26 and 3.3 installs.
