multicore support

Postby DragoonXX » Mon Jul 23, 2007 19:09

i'm looking into building up my next system using an intel Core 2 Quad q6600 and i had one question arise that i'm hoping someone would be able to answer.
How well does SL 3.3 (or 3.4) x64 edition handle 4 processing cores with default configuration (i've had too many kernels blow up on me...so i gave up kernel editing for the time being)?
my likely system specifications (hardware):
intel core 2 quad q6600
eVGA 680i mobo
2x corsair twin2X XMS 2048x6400C4 ram *total of 4 GB*
eVGA 8800GTX
3x 320GB Seagate barracuda 7200.10 (one sabayon, one windows, one data)
creative labs x-fi xtreme gamer
1x LG SATA DVD burner
1x ASUS SATA DVD burner
any of the above have known sabayon issues or quirks that i should know about?

Not sure but it is default build to support 8 cpu's / core's even for 32bit.

3.4a final should be more compatible with it as well as using i686 instead of the i586 we have been using.

PS> check out tomshardware.com as they have plenty reviews on parts + what uses more power / cost's you 200 buck more in electricity + actual real world test of the cpu's and other parts.
This ends up being really helpfull and might save you a lot of money parts wise and heating / cooling / electricity wise.

Newegg.com had some very good specials on their ram in the past 2 weeks for the 6400's , almost giving it away.
Not sure if fixed yet but the i650 / i680 does not get the full speed of sata hd's yet where the ich 7/8/9 does they have this on tomshardware.com as well , motherboards part.
If buying new hd's also check the websote as they have speed / performance specs that they tested to get you the best hd price / speed wise.

This changed my mind about the parts for a new pc I was going to build.
Linux + driver for evga 8800gtx you will have to google not sure how well this works yet with evga / xfx cards. gentoo.org forums / google .

3.4a final / stable should be out this week has lots of fixes + using default i686 now not i586 anymore. Check out the 1.0 BE version news page as it has the .config for the kernel , might help / give you a answer.

Hope this helps.

warra- i'll let you in on a few secrets
sata 3g...isnt utilized AT ALL...1.5 is barely scratched atm..so, full bw or not, i dont really care
i'm canadian, so newegg is useless to me, i prefer NCIX (which has a c2q q6600 for 323.64 after tax and ground shipping to where i live so hey)
i'm also more of a fan of xbit labs, which does more indepth testing to components, and i am aware of the differences, i am also aware that all but one of our wholesalers deals almost strictly with seagate- hence me getting them (i'm a 19 year old computer tech...)
an 8800GTX is an 8800GTX is an 8800GTX...that is...until you go to the factory overclocked/watercooled, yadda yadda edition...and i'm not getting a factory OC/watercooled
we ran an e6420 on our tech machine for about a week...i wasnt that impressed
i'm also after the 680i for the future ability to go to SLi, whereas intel chipsets either have no multi gpu support, or crossfire support
i already know what my full load power consumption is going to be, and i've got an overkill PSU for the job too

Cool was not sure how much it would have helped, so posted if needed.
That looks like a nice website xbit labs TY for the tip.

Intel just cut their prices in half so :) can get more new toy's now.

I saw a few persons having the evga think wolfden and someone else has it as well, maybe they can help with video card info.
Sry I do not keep track of what is said to who so might have duplicate info posted before.

yeah ever since i ran across xbit i've loved it- they're not ashamed to link to other sites that have information, so i'm game with them, and they're on top of stuff and are not biased one way or the other...and they have some good forums also, with forum members owning other review sites
yeah, i knew the price cut was coming, ncix put the c2q onto special with like 360 off from it's 630 and the notification of G0 stepping on them, so monday the new price went live when the G0 went active
:D
i'm still looking forward to phenom though
i'll probably end up running an intel and an amd system when phenom is stable

Cooool once you have time tell us how it works for you and possibly list the parts that you are using if anyone else wants to do the same, they can have a referance.

Quad core it picks them up as normal 4 cpu config ? wonder how to set the MAKEOPTS for quad core to get most of it. My dual core laptop works nicely with -j3 and -j16 but it hates -j5 for some reason, Intel t2600 479. It is time the -j options gets updated to core 2 duo and quad core specs.

I wonder if nvidia can do SLI yet in linux. I have heard that you can if having 2 nvidia cards dedicate one to vmware and another to pure SL , should be interesting to try that.

It is time I get a quad as well .

If only we can get the Sager np9260 to run Sabayon yeah freaky , but so expensive with the qx6850 dual 7950gtx 512mb ouch $5k , dreams LOL.

Doesn't have open source drivers and probably never will (or you deffinetely will never get fully support via open drivers). Close source drivers are apparently coming but its very unlikely they will be release any time soon. They said they would be out at the start of 2007 but they keep adding 3 months to the release date.

I'd suggest you dump it, use your on board card or if you need better sound get a Juli@ which is supported on Sabayon out of the box.
