Dual monitor issue and sound issue...

Postby Guardfather » Thu Jul 19, 2007 11:29

Monitor problem:

I have a Geforce 6800GS with two Viewsonic VX922 monitors. One monitor is running digital, the other analog. This is because my video card has one of each port. Now, I had my digital monitor on, and my analog monitor off when I booted into Sabayon. At the time to select whether to run live from CD or the other options, everything was displayed perfectly on my digital monitor. However, when Sabayon booted, the monitor went blank. I suspected that it somehow chose my other monitor as the primary, and turned it on. Sure enough, it had chosen the analog monitor for my display. Going into display settings, I was unable to choose my other monitor, much less a dual monitor configuration (which I'd like to use if possible). Is there anything I can do (without changing my physical configuration) to choose my digital monitor as my primary display, and/or use both monitors as I do in windows as one desktop?

Sound problem is described in a response to this thread:

Aside from those issues, so far I am very impressed with Sabayon and intend to use it as my primary OS in the near future. (I've been reliant on winblows for roughly 10 years) Kudos to the Sabayon team and everyone supporting the distro.

I am not sure, but i think Nvidia settings (in kmenu>system (or setting)) should help you with your problem since you got nvidia.
for dual monitors, try twinview.

possible help

Hello Guardfather,

I just installed Sabayon earlier today and am still fine tuning my configuration, but earlier I tackled the problem you have with dual monitors, if you still have it.

I have a Dell monitor on a dvi input to my GeForce 7800 GS and a BenQ monitor on a vga also to the 7800. When I first started Sabayon, only the BenQ was displaying the desktop. Going into NVIDIA X Server settings (can access through the command nvidia-settings, but make sure you do a su first as you need to overwrite your xorg file), under the option X Server Display Configuration there should be both monitors shown in the Layout. Your dvi monitor is probaly listed as being disabled. You can change this with the Configure... button. You can use this panel to set your resoltuions. If you want the dvi monitor to be the primary monitor, I did that by disabling my vga monitor while the dvi monitor was enabled. Then restarted x (ctrl-alt-backspace). Then went back into nvidia-settings and enabled my vga monitor. Now both monitors should be running.

I still haven't found out how to move windows between monitors, if you know please let me know. Also, my sound isn't working either atm so can't help you there.

I am pretty knew to Linux, so if this doesn't work for you there isn't much else I can suggest. Hope this helps.

I haven't had a chance to try these things yet, but I'll be sure to get back with my experience when I do. I'm VERY dependent on GUI yet. :\ So it may take me a bit of learning if I have to use the CLI.

alsaconf worked for me, thanks. I wonder why installing Sabayon doesn't do this automatically. Alsaconf's autosearch worked fine with no fine tuning for me so it seems like when I installed Sabayon it should have setup my sound.

I have used Twinview, but it isn't exactly what I want. I have different sized monitors (one 24" one 17") so spanning the desktop across the monitors doesn't look right. What I want to do is like how I had Windows setup before installing Sabayon was where each monitor could be used seperately but windows could still be dragged between monitors. I am probably not explaining it well.

But I am dling SL 3.4 right now so I am not going to mess with anything until I get that installed.

some sound cards are auto detected and setup and some aren't

twinview here with 2 different sized monitors and resolutions and I can drag just fine between the monitors.

Im having a very simular problem.

I went to the gentoo how to : Dual Monitor

But its written for people who have been doing this for a while.

Ive set up my Xserver to try twin view and seperate but nothing happens each time.

I save the config and i restart Xserver but nothing changes. When I come back Xserver is still set to what it was before.
