it will work on any arch system as it's been pointed out numerous times

gentoo.org has some really great documentation over there
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/index.xml
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml

It's like anything else, you have to learn it. Gentoo = Learning Curve

So before going out and firing up at a dev without reading what he said is not a good idea. One look at the /etc/make.conf should of told you everything.

Quite frankly, I could care less whether I''m speaking with a developer, a forum administrator, or a brand-new user (except for context, of course).

This leaves me with another question though: Why would x86~ packages be blocked from a fresh install? Is a multi-arch package somehow less stable? I must be missing something here, because blocking packages, unless they're somehow unstable, is undeniably contrary to a user's wishes.

Correct:
x86 = stable
~x86 = unstable
same with amd version 32bit and 64bit

Where is my edit button now damn.

You can install the unstable but is put to stable so new guy's don't fry their installs.
It works by unmasking or to edit /etc/make.conf to ~x86 and can install them just keep in mind they still might have some bug's, Also ther is a few things to do to make sure it is now accepting your ~x86 change and not still give error messages.

Hope this helps.

In my eyes, this radically shrinks the size of Portage's package base, if a solid portion of packages aren't even stable. (warning, whining forthcoming) And if the installed packages are so stable, then why did parts of my system crash on me? I found Sabayon to be significantly less stable than any major distribution I've used. Either I'm a rare fringe case, my laptop has some exotic hardware hidden that Sabayon's accessing, or the system is less stable than intended.

I do understand how to use my Unmask and Mask config files. I just didn't understand many entries in them, so I left them alone. I could certainly add the ~x86 to my unmask file, but if my system became any more unstable, it would border on unusable as a daily desktop.

Anyway, I'm sorry, but I feel I'm wasting your time. In the end, I don't see what benefits I'm going to gain by picking up the Gentoo skills. If someone could explain to me what these are, besides control (I'd be using Slack or Arch for that) than I'd really love to get my hands dirty with Gentoo. I know that Gentoo has many devoted users, and they certainly can't be crazy or masochistic, so I must be missing something. In the meantime, I'll use my Debian with KDE which is working very nicely right now.

But don't get me wrong. I'll continue reading andposting in this thread because I am genuinely curious about Sabayon and Gentoo and am not here just to whine about how things don't work.

Instead of reading in this thread read the above links, other people are not having issues understanding this. If you want to complain about portage than go complain to the gentoo devs. SL has no control over that. If you know what you are doing your system will not become unstable. Knowledge is your friend with this distro. You will learn everyday and new people have a lot to learn. I find it amazing that you can so call run Arch linux, but you can't figure this out, this just doesn't make sense.

Thread will be closed now as the information has been given, it's up to you to digest the information given.

Nitpick: "I could care less" means you DO care. "I couldn't care less" means you DON'T care. (Think about it.)
