nVidia needed but not found

Postby zeusx64 » Mon Jul 23, 2007 13:48

Good morning everyone. I just installed the 3.3 desktop but since my last excursion, have found that there are no nVidia drivers in the portage tree and my aiglx config, does not appear to work. It keeps blanking out when I run it and disappearing.
I would have installed the proprietary driver myself and I do have experience with it but Gentoo based systems are different and I am not very Gentoo savvy. Yes, I have installed nVidia drivers before but my experience is mainly OpenSuSE, so, with that said, Can I get some assistance with this PLEASE ? I would appreciate it very much.

I am in school and at work, so I will check back this evening. Thanks. :D

your missing the nvidia drivers?!

When you boot try adding
Code: Select all
xdriver=nvidia
to the boot up options.

Installing the nVidia drivers is exactly the same as Suse, just run the .run file

have you tried emerging the nvidia drivers? see here: http://www.sabayonlinux.org/wiki/index. ... in_Sabayon

In root shell type emerge nvidia-drivers or emerge nvidia-legacy-drivers depending on your card. Most people will just type the first one.

OK. Yes I tried emerge for the nVidia drivers but what I received was a statement that nVidia is no longer in the portage tree. I find that odd indeed. Even the simple Intel 915 resolution is listed as no longer in portage. I got the 3D working anyway. It just started after a reboot. Thanks for the link. I will save it for reference. I appreciate your help.

Have you ?
emerge --sync
emerge portage
layman -S
Then search and it should be there for both x86 stable and non stable.
emerge -s nvidia-drivers
ends up as version 100.xx

If all else fails right click and save to desktop this file.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_disp ... -9755.html
NVI*.run

To run / install it = at login window at the bottom is menu and use console login after downloaded and saved to your desktop.

cd /home/elvis/Desktop
then
ls
next
sh ./NVI*.run
follow the questions even if can not download kernel something = yes and continue.
At the end it will ask for nvidia config = yes and then reboot once finished.

It might complain about missing kernel and can not install then have to first
emerge sabayon-sources
and copy the
cp /proc/config.gz /usr/src/linux/config
This usually works.
then
eselect kernel list
eselect kernel set 3
replacing number 3 with the correct one for you if not already set.

then run the installer again
sh ./NVI*.run

Hope this helps.
