New graphic card?

Postby oleerik » Thu Jul 19, 2007 16:52

I am thinking of buying a new graphic card, and maybe a external hd with 1tb.

Is there any problems with new nvidia graphic cards? Or is the support very good? And what about external hds?

Thank you

It works with most nvidia from 6600 to 8800gtx ultra. Might have to google for the one you are thinking of buying and see if there is major issues or not. "gentoo xfx 8800 gts"
99.9% of the time it just works. Using laptop 7800gtx here.
The current driver is nvidia 100.?? in Sabayon might be able to find a list showing compatibility using google. SLI no clue as to how good it it supported yet .

The original cards for both nvidia and ati is the ?800 be it 6800 / 7800 / 8800 anything else they sell is underclocked / overclocked versions of the ?800 cards. Some has better powersaving or newer ram but the reasoning is still the same. You will also have to check your power supply as a 8800gts can use upto 280w or something like this have to google for correct numbers or tomshardware.com
The cable connecting the card from the power supply = 18Amps then it can deliver 12volts x 18 amps = 216 watts so a max of 190watts card can be on this cable. Have to check the power supply side for correct amp rating. 20000w power supply having several 12Vx10amps cables = useless = 120Watts max per cable / rail.

Hd's not sure about 1TB but it should work as the important part is the chip doing the translation for the usb adapter or the Esata / NAS connection.
If you can find that chip make model then you will know if the drive will work.
As for can or not read the 1TB size ext3 should be able to do it.

http://www.tomshardware.com has done a recent drive / speed test and it gives you prices + specs etc.
One thing to think about is 1TB hd or 2x 500gb's etc . If getting a usb esata enclosure remember to get one with a small fan as it will be needed.
Read some reviews if you can newegg.com has a few next to the actual drive info and persons experiences.
Zdnet.com or linked sites reviews always sounds like it is paid for and not sure if it is any good info.
Have a look at your light in the house if it dims when the AC fan goes on then you might have to look into a AVR battery backup or get a $20 opti AVR 1200 as tis will provide 95% or more cleaner more stable power = no burn motherboards or parts even with the best power supply clean stable power coming in is very important. Lost too many pc because of this bad blackout / brown out power I have here from Power company.

Hope this helps.
