Install DWl 650 wireless card

Postby rogval » Mon Jul 09, 2007 23:45

I'm a noob with linux , so bear with me!!

I put a dwl 650 wireless pci card in the tower a booted up my sabayon, however...I see no signs of it having installed so I'm guessing I need a driver for it...so where would I get that and install it.

Bottom line...I can't get the wifi to work...it is not on and there are no options to turn it on. when I got to the wizard that detects available networks, there are none even though I know there should be and it also shows no available wifi hardware even though it is there.

Also...where would one find the so called device manager in sabayon in order to manage your hardware and drivers?

Need to know version and chipset of your card
Commands such as lspci -nn
or
lspci -v
in konsole as root
would help, or the version number is probably on the card or packaging

Ok...my mistake...I was thinking of another system I was working on...the correct info is as follows...

The wireless card is a D-Link Airplus G DWL-G510

And the dial up modem is a Conexant HSF 56k HSFi Modem (rev 01) Conexant Dynalink 56PMi

That is the info i get when I execute lspci -v

I know for a fact the D-Link website does not a have a Linux driver for the wireless card and I'm having no luck with googling!!

Thanks for the help so far!!

If you look here, you'll see that there are 3 or more versions of this card, rev.A, B, C1 and C2

http://linux-wless.passys.nl/query_part ... ame=D-Link

Once you find out the exact version of your card, you can search Gentoo or Ubuntu forums for ideas on how to make it work.

I'm sorry...you're right... I just forgot to put that part in...it's a rev. B and I've tried googling searching other forums and everything I can think of, so I was just wondering if anyone knows by chance, specifically off the top of their head, where I need to go or what I need to do.

Driver is madwifi-ng -- I am not at Sabayon PC right now, but maybe you can emerge this and then try modprobe madwifi or modprobe madwifi-ng to get your card working

dialog for setting up your network is net-setup

I'm on loop 3 and it seems madwifi-ng is already installed..

Anyway, I'll assume you have an older version which perhaps doesn't or something. To do what he said: install it / upgrade it if it's currently installed and has a new version in one of two ways:

GUI style: You can run kuroo, which you can find in the start menu under "system". Search for madwifi-ng in the upper right *NOTE: if its icon shows up green, you already have it installed.. check the bottom to see if perhaps there is a new version*. Next, add the madwifi-ng (and probably madwifi-ng-tools too couldn't hurt) to your queue (bottom button), then click queue over to the left, click "check installation" and go find something to do for a few minutes.. come back, if it's "done", click start installation, then go find something to do for a while. Come back in maybe 15 minutes, and it might be done, or it might be sooner or later. Notifications in kuroo are at the bottom left of the program.

OR, Command Line style: find "konsole" in your start menu or on the desktop if you have an icon there, and the command will be sudo emerge madwifi-ng madwifi-ng-tools

After either of the above 2 steps, you will need to have konsole open.. you will need to modprobe for madwifi or madwifi-ng he says.. your right command would probably be sudo modprobe madwifi-ng or sudo modprobe madwifi most likely the former. I haven't used modprobe in some time, so you -may not- need "sudo" on there, I'm not sure. but it should give an obvious sign if it's not correct when you try.

Hope that helps..
