sab 3.3 on dell c840?

Postby tk421 » Sun Jul 01, 2007 13:49

has anyone else tried on a c-series dell laptop?

i got it installed in text mode, then at first boot, i get the dreaded black screen of death.
do xorgconfig, add 24bit modes for 1600x1200, and i think i managed to hose the keyboard in the process.
now i can see the beautiful new login screen @ 1600x1200 - but i cant type anything to log in :(

i cant even ctrl/alt/f1 to get to the console window. i dont have a usb keyboard around to plug into it either. (damn ps2 oldness.)

basically, am i going to have to put the dvd back in and do a repair?

edit: i discovered that i DO have a ps2 port! however, it didnt help. got into bios with the spare keyboard, but i still cant do anything with it once the kernel initalizes.

looks like a repair session. meh.

edit #2: reinstalled from dvd
did xorgconfig again
relevant settings - added 1600x1200 24bit mode
dell 101 keyboard
hor 30-100
vert 60

rebooted, and it works!
now to get my wireless working.

I put business edition (3.4) on this C840 last night.

interestingly enough i ran into a couple of issues with the display too.

every time i booted the live DVD i was getting a black screen, but could VT on F1.. etc

ended up manually editing the xorg.conf down to a vesa driver and restarting xdm (/etc/init.d/xdm restart). This allowed me o run through installation mode.

Once installed i tried nvidia as the xorg driver again, but just a black screen and no error in the Xorg.0.log file! The i tried the Xorg nv driver and that is currently working (for business edition) Screen is at full 1600x1200.
glxgears is reporting
483 frames in 6.7 seconds = 71.970 FPS
339 frames in 5.8 seconds = 58.023 FPS
which isn't grand
That said, DRI isn't working yet.

The other thing i did last night was to emerge --sync and layman -S, to update and install the latest nvidia drivers (100.14.11-r10)
now xorg log reports
(WW) NVIDIA(0): The NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go GPU installed in this system is
(WW) NVIDIA(0): supported through the NVIDIA 1.0-96xx Legacy drivers.
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Please visit http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html for
(WW) NVIDIA(0): more information. The 100.14.11 NVIDIA driver will ignore
(WW) NVIDIA(0): this GPU. Continuing probe...
(EE) No devices detected.

Looks like i need to drop down to an earlier version, but it's early days and i haven't got that far yet.

Sorry for the long post, just thought i'd share my findings.

p.s. card is 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 440 Go] (rev a3)

i may have to try the Business Edition.

i was having serious issues with 3.3 for some reason - however i got my mandriva 07 to install just fine.

this c840 is just really a time-waster for me - my gaming rig is on xp, and i have an xp install for the c840 on a 2nd hdd, that i can just swap whenever i need to.
