Compiling new kernel, and can't install nvidia-drivers

Postby smolloy » Wed Jul 18, 2007 21:59

I'm following the wiki instructions to compile an updated kernel -- http://www.sabayonlinux.org/wiki/index.php?title=HOWTO:_Upgrade_kernel_using_genkernel

I'm using Sabayon 3.3 x86_64, which I've brought to world update, and I'm trying to upgrade the kernel from 2.6.20 to 2.6.22. It compiles successfully, but errors out when I try to install my nvidia-drivers. It complains that I compiled glibc with the nptl USA flag, despite glibc not being compatible with this flag.

Can anyone advise as how to get past this problem? Thanks.

I have had some luck with "nvidia 9755 .run" as it might be able to work for you and or bypass the error. It builds itself or tries to download a compatible kernel if not found on the hd.

Link is for SL 1.0 BE / boot folder from the live dvd .rar , Might be able to use this.

I found an easy solution for this issue:

For now, emerge the portage version of the nvidia-drivers instead of the one from the overlay.

Can you tell me how to do this? How to make sure it d/loads the portage version, and ignores the sabayon overlay?

there's probably a easy portage command to use that I havn't heard of, however you could try commenting out the source command in make.conf and d/l your drivers then restore the olriginal make.conf

Find out the version in portage and tell emerge to emerge it

emerge =x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-xxxxx

if you still can't get it

layman -d sabayon

emerge nvidia-drivers

layman -a sabayon

How safe is it to use
emerge --nodeps nvidia-drivers
in a case like this and then later
revdep-rebuild

Or it is not going to work for this ?
I presume the ntpl error will show up again this way ?

The trouble with emerging an earlier version of nvidia-drivers:

x11-base/xorg-server-1.3.0.0-r1 (depends on x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-100.14.11-r10)

The present version of nvidia-drivers is Hardmasked

What to do?

I haven't tried it yet, but I was wondering if you get the same error if you remove the sabayon overlay before emerging nvidia-drivers?
