Ok, I can answer some basic questions, but I can't really solve your problem.

NTFS and FAT32 are different ways that your hard drive partitions can be formatted. NTFS is what Windows is installed on.

So, what is happening, is that the LiveDVD of Sabayon and GParted can't find/recognize your hard drive or any partitions on it. Your best option is to check to see if there is a newer version of your motherboard's BIOS that you can update. Another possible solution would be to see if there is a different spot you can plug your hard drive into your motherboard, as some motherboards have different controllers for different plugs (some controllers are more linux friendly than others). If that's not the case, then I'm afraid this is the end of how much help I can give.

A word of advice though, don't reinstall Windows in order to get linux to work, because I don't see how that could help.

thanks for the explanation. i think i will just wipe my whole hard disk drive clean. than im gonna just install sabayon and maybe ubuntu. i don't think ill mess with windows. only if there is a game I MUST play but even then i don't think it be worth the hassle. that and i honestly think that if ya work at it enough, ANYTHING will run on linux. it just takes a little time.

by the way i tried the virtual machine thing and its a no go... sense i am using Ultimate Boot CD, what options should i use to wipe the ENTIRE hard disk drive and start fresh. if worse comes to worse i can always just reinstall an old ubuntu disk i got stashed somewhere.

EDIT-------

im gonna write a new DVD (i know i'm asinine) and i'm using nero to write my stuff on my DVD RW's. is this a good idea? getting sabayon 3.3 now... im gonna try and use the 3.4 loop3 first but if its no dice than i got a back up.

I THINK I FOUND MY OWN PROBLEM!!!!

ok, i narrowed it down.

1) i updated my BIOS system to the latest vertion, that didn't effect anything

2) my hardware is all supported by other linux distros

3) my hardware is wired correctly

4) i am RIGHT NOW communicating to you all over a live cd of one of my old ubuntu 6.06 so its not the drivers.

5) its not the ubuntu i ruined that is effecting everything (i wouldn't be able to use the live cd if it did)

so what is the issue?

i am starting to think its the new DVD+RW's i bought yesterday. they were made by memorex. i don't know why, but every cd i try to use that i burned something too, doesnt work. yet when i pop in an official live cd made by conical, i get good resaults.

TELL ME WHAT TYPE OF DISK DO YOU ALL USE IN ORDER TO GET SABAYON TO WORK!

i would buy a disk, but i don't like buying things via internet. is there a way i could just send a check and have them deliver it all to me? id buy 50 disks if i could do it.

also, what program did you use to burn sabayon onto the cd you picked.

i am fairly certan i know what iso to use. 84_64 as my comp should support 64 bit. i have been downloading them in .zip format and just extracting everything to the cd to burn. including the text file. is that recomended?

also, because i am now using a live cd, how do i use it to vaporise my ubuntu mess?

thanks for the help guys :-) your advise all paid off in the end. infact, i would say your advise is like raw gold ore. its impure but still highly valuable. all i need to do is apply it and maybe that alone will refine that gold.

again, many thanks and i hope i havn't bothered you all too much.

I strictly use Verbatim -R disks

I don't know any place that takes a check. I do lots of shopping on line and never had a problem.

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php <-- will take care of any partitions

Not sure about the zip thing you mentioned as winrar will confuse a something.iso with a winrar archive type file.
All the versions is only something.iso , no zip , no rar only .ISO files.

I got some free junk with this laptop express burn / magic iso / easy dvd burner so I use the anyone of them.
Disk's I have some TDK 16x dvd+r stuff from Walmart and it work not sure how good the quality is.
I burn them at 4x max and use the old generic settings so it can work with any old pc just in case.

Something about check's = newegg.com might be able to help you or even walmart / tigerdirect.com if in the USA not sure about overseas. zipzoomfly.com

Best option is to try a friends dvd drive to burn it and if it works then either your burning software or the actual dvd drive is unhappy. no zip no rar files only .ISO

Code: Select all
"Sabayon-x86_64-1.0-BusinessEdition.iso"
Beta "SabayonLinux-x86_64-3.4.Loop3a.iso"
OLD CD "SabayonLinux-x86_64-3.3b.miniEdition.iso"

Gparted or if in terminal as root "cfdisk " and it will select the first hd and then browse / edit / apply = yes and quit.

UBCD has plenty of seagate , maxtor / partition / antivirus and other software so it is build to erase / undelete to check etc , but the link explains it all.

I am sure I posted it but here it is again all on this link page.

this is odd, i was in windows when i downloaded my .ISO only i used bit torrent and it gave me everything in a zip file. anyways, i think i will just download from a server now. i might use the austria server, granted im in the USA but it still seems to be faster than the rest.

anyways, i used GParted to erase my whole hard drive and i installed and went though about a hour upgrading process to get to ubuntu 7.04 so ya. can the live CD run inside ubuntu if i get a good cd to do so. or will i have to use something else. id rather use it inside an OS so it just feels more secure and stable.

thanks for the help everyone :-D it made a big difference.

Yes using vmware or virtualbox you can make a virtual pc and run it.
Virtualbox will only run as a 1 cpu machine at this stage , I think the HD image for this 20gb ext3 I created is still here in the forums as it does take a bit of time to let virtualbox actually create this and then format it.
So the fix = this img of the virtual hd = .rar file and extract then add to virtualbox and partition using the iso to boot from or a burned dvd.
Vmware can get direct access to the hardrive in your pc or virtual hd. It can also have 2 cpu of you have a dual core pc. I have had some nasty with vmware so I do not like it or at least the latest versions , but should work fine for you or whatever virtual pc software you choose to use.

I ran 3.4 loop3 in virtualbox on pclinuxos 2007 and made backups of the installed then I could play with it and when I make some serious mistake and mess it up = del hd image and extract the backup with SL already installed = happy + saves time.

Hope this helps. PS virtualbox works in Linux / Osx / windows.

I'm having the same issues. I've tried the 32 bit and 64 bits of the latest DVD, as well as a Micro Edition CD. The image downloaded and burned fine. I've tried every "cheat code" I could think of. I can boot to any other Live CD/DVD I've tried, which is about 8 other distros. When I boot to any other live media, because it has an older kernel, it shows /dev/hdx but with the Sabayon disk, it only shows /dev/sdx for my IDE devices, and even when I attempt to manually point Sabayon to those devices, they fail.

With so many people reporting the same problem, I would advise using an older kernel on the 3.4 release until you can find a work around.

Nothing makes a distro look worse than not even being able to start the installer.
