menu.lst info [Solved]

Postby Bazzah » Sat Jul 14, 2007 23:59

First post and all that so hello.

I usually use PCLOS and smashing though it is, I installed Sabayon to get a slighty different take on Linux.

My question is simple - I want to add Sabayon to my PCLOS GRUB menu - what info do I need? I declined to install GRUB from Sabayon as am happy with my current set up.

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to SL. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
I don't know for sure if this will work but try booting live cd and copy what it has in /boot/grub/menu.lst or /boot/grub/grub.conf and write that to /boot/grub/menu.lst in PCLOS.

For what it's worth I really wish more distros would include this information in release notes. Also FWIW the best grub loader I've found for recognizing multiple Linux partitions + 'dows is Debian. SL fans don't despair, I REALLY like this distro, I just find the Debian [another fine distro] boot loader to be better at recognizing multiple Linux partitions of differing flavors.

Here I have 2 Sabayon 3.3 (full and mini), PCLOS and WXP. Grub is from PCLOS, the same as you wanna do. Clean it and adapt to your PC (attention to your cheatcodes and adresses/partitions):
color black/cyan yellow/cyan
gfxmenu (hd0,6)/usr/share/gfxboot/themes/pclinuxos/boot/message
default 0

title Sabayon
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/kernel-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.20-sabayon-r3 root=/dev/ram0 ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/sda5 quiet init=/linuxrc splash=silent,theme:sabayon CONSOLE=/dev/tty1 dodmraid pci=nomsi vga=0x31b
initrd /boot/initramfs-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.20-sabayon-r3

title Sabayon mini

initrd /boot/initramfs-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.20-sabayon-r3

title PCLOS
kernel (hd0,6)/boot/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=linux root=/dev/sda7 acpi=on resume=/dev/sda6 splash=silent vga=788
initrd (hd0,6)/boot/initrd.img

title wxpy

Tnanks for that - are you using a 64 bit machine or is that just the kernel name?

Also, was just looking at the partition from PCC in PCLOS, and a couple of questions sprang to mind -

- does Sabayon recognise swap files made by other distros on a different disk (Sabayon in on hdb, PCLOS is on hda)? Otherwise I just have a big block of ext3 formatted disk.
- When I installed Sabayon yesterday, the mount point I put in was root. Was that the correct thing to do?

Thanks for the replies guys. Good suggestion, Red Knuckles.

looking forward to trying Sabayon out.
