Thats OK, you do need to be connected to the net to merge things though. The emerge command allows linux to download, check, install stuff automagically from the net.

Hi there, I am also new to this but the way I have managed to get around the same problem is:

The first thing I did was to remove the wep key from my router and made sure that I was able to connect wirelessly without the key. This worked for me fine, then while still connected reconnect to the router and reapply the wep key. Then I disconnected the wireless. Then reconnect but use the connect to other wireless network and input your setting, click connect and all should work ok. After this I have found that my computer connects up fine now but I can only do it with the connect to other wireless network. I hope this helps.

By the way this was all done with the KnetworkManager.

I think i'll give up, its still not working. I re-installed sabayon to start from scratch. Connected to my dads router by wired connection and it worked straight away. It just wont work on my laptop internal wireless adapter. Stupid really, because i was so close to finding a successful alternative to windows.... has anyone had any success using one of those usb wireless adapter sticks (like a memory stick size)?

Or does anyone know if there is any way of me getting this damn thing to work?

I appreciate all your help!

I highly recommend using KWallet to store your wireless WEP/WPA keys. I've run into issues otherwise.

Don't give up yet. Just a couple of short months ago I was a miserable Windows user. You mention that your wireless card is a RaLink RT2500. The drivers for this card are actually included with Sabayon, so they should be installed and configured to run.

So first, check to make sure the drivers for the RT2500 are installed. Run a console (doesn't have to be root) and do this:

Code: Select all
emerge -s rt2500

I get the following:

Code: Select all
*  net-wireless/rt2500
      Latest version available: 1.1.0_pre2007032315
      Latest version installed: 1.1.0_pre2007032315
      Size of files: 307 kB
      Homepage:      http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com
Description:   Driver for the RaLink RT2500 wireless chipset
      License:       GPL-2

If it came up as [ Not Installed ] or if you don't have the latest version available, then you'll need to connect via wired ethernet and run (as root):

Code: Select all
emerge rt2500

Then, to check to see if Sabayon has loaded the drivers, do this:

Code: Select all
lsmod | grep rt2500

If you see any output, chances are it's running and in good shape. There are a couple of network managers available, KNetworkManager is installed by default. It usually works ok for me (I used to blame it for my problems but later discovered them to be caused by other things), so if for some reason it's not working for you, you can try an alternative called wlassistant.

First unmerge KNetworkManager.

Code: Select all
emerge -C knetworkmanager

To download and install wlassistant, you do this as root (still connected to the Internet):

Code: Select all
emerge wlassistant

Give that a shot and come back here. Also note that just because a new release is coming out doesn't mean all the issues you've been having will be instantly fixed. Linux takes a bit of work, but it's worth it.

Hope this helps you out.

ENNO, are you having this issue with wireless or with your built-in wired ethernet card?

If it is indeed wireless you're trying to troubleshoot, you would discover the name of the device using:

Code: Select all
lspci | grep 802.11

as indicated earlier in this thread.

Sorry to hear that. The above code should have worked, as root.

Best of luck.
