Help making preinstalled VirtualBox fully functional

Postby Bluevobler » Tue Jul 10, 2007 5:36

I am new to Gentoo and obviously to Sabayon as well. Just installed Sabayon 3.4.3 on my box. Everything went very well and I have been quite impressed with this distro. I would appreciate some help with the preinstalled VirtualBox. It is missing VirtualBox Additions which is limitting its overall usability. I tried to use emerge to install the Additions but got the message that the package is blocked. Running emerge --pretend did not tell me anything usefull either. I have read earlier posts about installing VirtualBox from scratch from VBox site ,but I think it would be an useful exercise for a newbie to complete the installation of this package using wonderfull "emerge" feature.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Thanks Wolfden,

I did indeed look at the link you mentioned but this does not answer my question. I installed the DVD version of Sabayon which comes with VBox already preinstalled. It works quite well, but it needs the additions for USB support, screen size, resolution etc. I just don't understand why I should install VBox again going through all the hassle just to get the Additions to work.

Thanks in advance

Hi

I have Virtualbox installed in /opt/Virtualbox directory and the additions part is in /opt/VirtualBox/additions
Is this not the same for you? Your Virtualbox might be installed in a different directory to mine.

All the best

Thanks Dabe,

My VBox is installed in the same directory as yours "/opt/VirtualBox". Unfortunatelly, /opt/VirtualBox/additions is not even there for some reason. As I said before - emerge keeps giving me "blocked package" message when I try to get the additions by running it.

Thanks

Hi Dave,

Sorry for misspelling your name. It is just so hellishly hot down here.

Here is what I did since my laptop dual boots WinXP/Sabayon. I downloaded & installed Virtualbox for windows & copied VBoxGuestAdditions.iso from my windows partition (Program Files/innotek VirtualBox/) to /opt/VirtualBox on my Linux partition.
