I have a fresh install of SL. I just updated firefox to 2.0.0.4, and it took 3 hours and 5 minutes...this is my 2nd install of SL, from 2 different sources (1st was mini CD, this is DVD). Both took forever to use emerge.

I have tried both emerge and kuroo (this instance was kuroo). and ideas why it is so sloooooowwwwwww?????

Its a big package thats why, its a whole lot of source code to compile (but nothing compared to openoffice, hehe thats a go on long weekend trip compile, i exaggerate)

Anyhoo, theres a mozilla-firefox-bin (precompiled binary) in portage which installs in the time it takes you to download it. The devs are working on a binary package installer called Entropy as we speak. http://planet.sabayonlinux.org/?p=19

Theres a few binary packages in portage mplayer-bin, open-office-bin etc etc

ok...I guess that makes sense...

my only real experience with linux is Ubuntu...the apt-get was just much faster, but maybe that's just because there were more compiled apps on there.

Is there a way that once I have a package compiled to save it...I always seem to screw something up and need to reinstall when I'm learning something new, and would hate to have to recompile everything again...

If you dont like compiling you should have.

emerge mozilla-firefox-bin

I dont think theres any compiling involved.

ubuntu is binary based

SL is source based

and no there is no way to reinstall without compiling. There are some binary files tho, like mozilla-firefox-bin u can install and wont take as long.

The power of this is setting your configs and compiling the software for your hardware and usage to produce a rock solid fast system

To be honest, sounds like you may be happier with a binary-based distro. Compiling gives you extra power/customizibility, at the expense of a lot of extra time. If you don't need to additional power of compiling, Gentoo/Sabayon may not be a good fit for you.

From Gentoo Handbook.

Code: Select all: To create a prebuilt package you can use quickpkg if the package is already installed on your system, or emerge with the --buildpkg or --buildpkgonly options. If you want Portage to create prebuilt packages of every single package you install, add buildpkg to the FEATURES variable.

even in Sabayon 3.4 to install software it will take that long to complie? 3hrs?

I am using kuroo and installing blender and it's been 19 minutes installing!

uhhhh, 3 hours is FAST for firefox. Dude, if that's a problem for you just emerge mozilla-firefox-bin
