This is with SabayonLinux x86-64, Beryl, XGL, ATI Proprietary Linux Driver-8.38.6
"eselect opengl set ati" didn't work
/opt/bin/amdcccle results in Segmentation Fault
ldd /opt/bin/amdcccle shows (for libGL):
libGL.so.1 => /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1 (0xf7d05000)
(I previously deleted all libGL.* from every directory I could find, in case there were old versions, and let the driver install its libraries)
/opt/bin/fglrxinfo shows:
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI MOBILITY RADEON X700
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (2.0.6474 (8.38.6))
fgl_fglxgears shows:
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get fbconfig
fgl_glxgears shows the same:
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get fbconfig

Have you ever had the problem of no DRI before?? This could be something serious. then again. Heres something to try.
emerge -C ati-drivers
layman -S && emerge --sync
USE="qt3" emerge ati-drivers
(edit xorg.conf to use radeon/(anything) instead and look like a fresh xorg.conf)
then
aticonfig --initial (that will properly configure xorg.conf to the fglrx drivers)
then
amdcccle
then configure to your liking, save, restart.
If this doesn't work... you're SOL
the only fix after this is to redo all the OS that I can think of.

USE="qt3" emerge ati-drivers failed while building fgl_glxgears. I tried without the USE="qt3", same results. I'll try the ATI installer by itself now.

aticonfig --initial
Uninitialised file found, configuring.
Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Saved back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.original-0
Segmentation fault
I checked, it didn't finish making xorg.conf. So I copied to old to the new.
Time to reboot.

Rebooted, no X. It mentioned missing configuration files.
So I've reinstalled.
But.
I checked on the Live CD (3.4 Loop3a):
Without Beryl or XGL, on this machine (AMD Turion 64 with ATI X200), with the 8.37.6-r90 ati-drivers, amdcccle (the Catalyst Control Center) and fgl_fglxgears both run fine.
But with Beryl and XGL turned on: amdcccle "Segmentation fault", and fgl_fglxgears
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get fbconfig
So there's an incompatibility with either Beryl or XGL's code and the fglrx driver.
I'll try to update the catalyst now and see if the control center will work on my machine without Beryl or XGL.

I rebooted. Catalyst Control Center comes up fine, as does fgl_fglxgears, but I can't activate the Acceleration Manager for Beryl. I'm still on the 8.37.6 driver. I'll update the driver soon and see what happens.
