how do i set up a logitech webcam with SL?

Postby dkarlmt » Sun Jul 01, 2007 22:23

I just got a logitech quickcam deluxe notebook webcam and do not know how to get it to work with SL. I went into Kuroo and found a file under logitech for webcams and installed it, but nothing seems to have changed.

What do I have to do to get the webcam to run?

ok, I tried to follow the directions in that link, but I am still a newbie and was unable to follow. So far, I ran the "lsusb" command to determine the chipset of my webcam (not sure what that was supposed to do), then it says to check to see if I have support for "Video for Linux" enabled and says to run the command "modprobe videodev" and it doesn't appear to do anything so I'm guessing I don't have that file or something. So I moved on to the next step and this is what it looks like:

localhost daniel # # modprobe uhci-hcd
localhost daniel # # modprobe ohci-hcd
localhost daniel # modprobe videodev
localhost daniel #

apparently nothing is happening. I'm not understanding how this is supposed to be working. Can someone help me out with the step by steps for beginner understanding?

Still need help with this issue if anyone can help me. I'm still not good at installing things on Linux...I just got rid of windows a few months ago and haven't had a need to change anything in SL and am still unfamiliar with the gentoo way of doing things.

can someone give me the steps for setting up my webcam or does anyone know if webcam support will be included in SL 3.4. If so, I can just wait the next few weeks for the supposed release of that.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

OK
localhost daniel # # modprobe uhci-hcd
localhost daniel # # modprobe ohci-hcd
localhost daniel # modprobe videodev
localhost daniel #

you dont have to put the #, that is just used to show you need to be root, make sure you login first using the "su" (without quotes) command
then type "modprobe uhci-hcd" (without quotes)
and modprobe videodev

sorry...that must have been a typo.

I did those commands and I'm not sure if anything was supposed to happen, because I didn't get any responses and the computer didn't seem to load anything.

But my question is what to do after that...I'm trying to follow the steps, but I'm confused as to what to do after those 2 commands.

ok...well I tried to proceed again, but once again I am at a roadblock...

I checked and I do have <M> Video For Linux in the proper directory.

Now apparently I need to install the drivers, I am just not following what it is saying, whether I need to select which driver I need or if I need multiple or all.

I tried to start 1 by 1 in Portage, but I was having some problems so I switched to Kuroo and I looked for "qc-usb" and "spca5xx" and could not find one that could be emerged.

I looked in the link for generic drivers and compatible webcams but couldn't find and exact match to what was listed when I ran "lsusb"

Any ideas on what I should do from here?
